Ports on Phuket

by RuthHaddon

i will be arriving november, just for 1 day on star cruises Virgo. i am unable to find out exactly where the ship docks and would like to know. I know the ship will offer day trips, but would really like to just visit local spots or walk. I do not know which town is closest to port. any one been there please, and what would i do in a day wandering around to see some sights please

The cruise ships often drop anchor in Patong Bay and they have smalled craft to transfer people to Patong.

Hi - check this site for the port/terminal information. Looks like there are only 2 berths and that you'll have to take transportation to the nearest town.

You may also want to check for cruise and port info.

Have a great cruise!

Yes, John is correct. The Superstar Virgo anchors off Patong Beach and uses its own lifeboats as well as local tenders to take passengers on the five minute trip to shore.

You will be able to walk to the OTOP markets and Jungceylon shopping centre easily from the beach.

Be aware that you will probably be approached by one of many tuk tuk drivers lined up to meet the ship, offering private tours around the island. There are not expensive but you will be taken to the obligatory jewellery stores etc. While its fun, if a little hair-raising dodging the traffic as you bounce around in the back, it is time consuming. If you are wanting to shop I would just walk to the markets from the ship.

I think you should check with the cruise line as they do not always anchor off Patong Bay. More often than not it will be at the deep sea port at Ao Makam. We had friends on the Virgo a few weeks ago and this is where they berthed!!

It is about a 30-40 min drive into Patong, you really will not have any choice but to use the tuk tuk / mini bus drivers there to bring you into Patong etc.
I have also seen what the ship offers for days trips and they are sooooo expensive compared to what you can buy here or even online with various tour operators!

Yes, Cathy is correct. It depends on the cruiser and the time of year. They only go to Patong during high season - when the west coast is calm.

Thanks Cathy and Tina for giving RuthHaddon more up to date information but it will be a little disappointing if the Virgo doesnt anchor off Patong as this was a highlight of my cruise.

However I do understand that rough seas would be a concern. I was lucky enough to be there in February and the bay was very calm.

Travel Tips for Phuket

Free Internet with a Sexual Twist

by balisunshine

When traveling abroad,
keeping in touch via the internet,
is definitely the way to go.

But with internet prices in Thailand
that will cost you at least 50 Bahts
or more, it can all add up.

So it is always a pleasure
to be able to connect for free.

In the gay quarters,
Paradise in Patong Beach,
at Connect Hotel and bar/restaurant,
if you consume your internet connection
is absolutely free.

Ok, ok.
Yes, you must consume,
but how many of us don’t consume something
to drink or eat in an internet café anyway?

They even have wireless connection too!
A hot spot for sure!

So if you are sure of your sexuality,
this is the place to go!

Extremely, friendly atmosphere
and good snacks too!
Yum! Yum! Yum!

Thailand's tropical climate is influenced by the southwest and northeast monsoons. There are three seasons: Dry (November through March), Hot (April through May) and Rainy (June through October). Diving is possible and popular all year round, but there are about 10 days each year when monsoon winds are too strong for safe recreational diving. The temperature ranges from 20-35 C, its always warm but it can also be very hot and humid with cooler nights. The water temps are never cold and usually around 22-28C.

Freedom beach

by xaver

It is a really small beach that you can reach only by boat, when in Patong beach ask some of the guys near the small boats on the seaside to bring you there and then agree with them the time they come and pick you up.
You will find a really desert beach( at least it was desert a couple of years ago), white sand and incredible water.

Ocean Plaza Patong Beach

by Cathy&Gary about Ocean Plaza Patong Beach

The department store has some good buys in quality men's, women's and children's clothing.

Women shoes are good here as well, but if you have big feet like me, you will miss out.

There are lots of little individual shops in this centre and upstairs there is a sport shop that has all the original name brands.

They often have sales and if you can find something to fit you will get a bargain.

The brand Body Glove is very cheap in this sports shop and they have a lot of Cool-Dri sports tops.

There is also a bowling alley on the top floor, a supermarket downstairs with a bottle shop and chemist.

Another small department store with little individual shops.
On the first floor there is a good selection of swimmers etc.

There is also a good clothes shop at the back on the right hand side.
They have beautiful dressing gowns and lots of nice trendy skirts and dresses.

Ladies Chinese style pj's cost 250 baht.
To get to Ocean Plaza keep walking up beach road towards Patong Merlin.

Go Go Bars

by beccyandjohn about Bangla Road

An a go go bar is a place where you can watch Thai girls dancing to music often not wearing much, there not aloud to go nude as this is against the Tai Law.

The girls will often talk to customers and have a drink but if you want them to be yuor guest you would have to pay the bar man/woman, as she would no longer be assisting the bar with entertainment.

We did see one man buy a girl or two, this was in what i thought was a sports bar as John wanted to watch a MAN U game, me not really bothered with the footie was people watching when i noticed this man get up with 2 tai girls, before he left the bar he went to the bar and paid the bar man some cash which didn't go into his usual cash box. He had a a small tresure chest where he deposited this money...
