Area is Phuket

by moe217

Which is the best area to stay in while in Phuket. So many different comments about the different beaches, Patong, Karon. WE want some quiet but not real rowdy either. Going in 2 weeks. Also any suggestions about places to stay, maximum is 1800b per night. Would like close to beach but with a pool also. Phuket vs Krabi which is better. Any info will help. We are coming from Pattaya so have just about seen it all!!!!!

We just sent to Phuket in February and it was fantastic. We booked Paresa via Showfares.com
Its near Kamala beach which is no where rowdy like Patong. Surin beach is not bad too.

I think Karon beach is the best with very white clean sand. It is a quiet area away from Patong Beach where the entertaiment section seeps. If game, you can always rent a scooter to go to where the action is. I stayed at the Karon Beach
Hotel and at this time there are many deals for 1800 bhts. It is right on the beach at the far end near the cliff. If possible go to both Krabi and Phuket. Each is different from the other. Krabi has stunning landscapes and you can walk on water in low tide out five hundred yards. Krabi is less than a 100 miles east of Phuket, they have great water tours to snorkel and lay on the beach for ten dollars on a boat. Of all places in Thailand that I have visited in the past 20 years, I like Phuket and Krabi the most. I also like Phi Phi Island which was on the way of my travels too. I have a picture on my homepage of Krabi. Have fun!~

Patong beach is very crowded and rowdy. better to stay at Karon, it still has night life but is more family oreinted. better to stay at Karon and visit patong beach in the evening. there are still markets and shopping in karon. We hired a scooter to travel back and forth from Karon to Patong beach. We stayed at the Centara Karon. Absolutely fabulous and not far from the beach. 3 different pools to choose from.

Diving in Phuket (Report) Woohoo!

by canicus

Hiya All,

Just got back from Diving in Phuket on 18-22 August. Weather there was cloudy but no
heavy rains. Joined a German DC(DiveAsia) at Patong for a day trip
for diving.

Price for 3 Dives and Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner was BHT 2900 and 500 for
equipment.

Dived at Ko Dok Mai/Ko Bida Nai/Ko Bida Nok. Total Time for trip (8am -8.30pm)

Seas were choppy in the morning but leveled out towards the afternoon.

Visibility for Ko Bida Nai/Ko Bida Nok was about 10-15m and was about
15 - 20 for Ko Doc Mai.

Vessel was M/V Dive Asia II (23m) had all the amnities needed.(Read
as "place to take a crap & nap"

Things spotted during this dive trip:
Huge Phuket Lobster, Moray Eels, Leopard Shark,Lionfish, Grouper,
assorted other fishies.

Was pleasantly surprised to find such a profusion of marine life
after the tsunami, ask the DM and he said that it could be due to
the "new food sources" after the tsunami.(hehehe)

Corals around Ko Bida were slightly damaged but Ko Dok Mai was still
more or less intact.

Really enjoyed the dives as I had a DM as my buddy and we dived some
really interesting places (Ko Dok Mai Underwater caves anyone?)

Okay, that's abt it for now. Drop me a line if you want to find out
more?

Btw, Diveasia is at http://www.diveasia.com/

Who to look for for group bookings or a better deal: Stefan (DM)

Cheers! Standard Gear. BCD regulators and suits were quite new and well maintained.

Markets Phuket

by Cathy&Gary about Markets Phuket

Many items that are sold in Patong are cheaper in the city.

Along Montri, Phang Nga, Rassada and Yaowarat roads, there are lots of handicraft, souvenir and antique shops.

Downtown Market, Ranong Rd, Phuket (next to Bus station) Fresh food markets and clothing etc

Night Market Phuket
This market is a large weekend market, selling clothing, souvenir, household items etc. Even though the clothing is tailored to local fashion styles and sizes, good cheap food as well. In the photos there are covers on the beds. These can be used for tablecloths, curtains, bed decorations etc. They are both the same size, medium and I paid 300baht each for them.

You gotta see it to believe it !!!

by Uluwatu about Clubs, bars, go go

Go to the string of bars ... like 50 of them off of Bangla Road in Patong. It's insane what you see here... Disneyland on Acid. Every bar has its own flavor ... And freaks everywhere. Animals everywhere .... Tranvestites everywhere ... Entertainment to the max .... just bring a lotta film.... Anything .... or nothing at all

Meter Taxis from the Airport

by chatterley

Instead of taking the limousine taxi service from the airport, we came out of the airport, walked past the carpark and saw the "Taxi Meter" stand. Besides the fair stated on the meter, you'll pay an extra 100 baht. In the end, we paid a total of 480 baht for the taxi ride from airport to our hotel (situated at Karon). From what I heard from friends who took the limousine ride, this rate is cheaper than the 600 - 800 baht charged by the limousine taxi companies.
