go directly to any agents while you are there...compare the prices and go for it. They are pretty much the same for day tours. Hotels for sure are not expensive. There may be some places not open due to low season. You can rent a car or motorbike (only if you can drive well with hilly roads) cheaply.

The hotel gets pretty good reviews on tripadvisor by past guests, you may want to take a look at the reviews yourself at www.tripadvisor.com

For island hopping you have to be careful. You might see a trip sold in your hotel, then walk outside somewhere and see a trip that looks the same, for half price or less. But in reality, the margins are only about 20% (it's a VERY competitive market!), so if there is significant difference in price, then the quality of the trip will be significantly different. So you pretty much get what you pay for. If you want a recommendation of a good travel agent, who can book most trips, I recommend South Services in Phuket town. I've been using them for years and they are very professional. There are some amazing islands around Phuket!

Patong is the place for night-life. There's a selection of bars, nightclubs etc. It's not a big place so you could try a variety of options in one evening. in Phuket town Timber-hut is the most popular night-club, and none of the pubs in town are particularly noteworthy!

For sightseeing, the coast road is well worth a drive . . . some great views and great beaches. Elephant-trecking can be an interesting experience. I recommend Siam Safari for that, as they are the only one that is known to look after the elephants really well. You could go up to the gibbon rehab center and walk up to the waterfall (only 10 minutes walk) and further up beside it and on, if you want a bit of genuine jungle experience. Sea-canoeing can be great too (even if it's raining). John Gray is the best company for that.

Low season (April to Oct) is cheaper and less busy, but the weather's not so good. This year the change to the cooler part of the low season is already 2 months late and it hasn't changed as it usually does, so it's hotter and more humid than usual right now.

Around the Panwha Cape you will find the Marine Biological Research Centre and Phuket Aquarium which has displays of several hundred exotic, grotesque and colourful marine species found in Phuket's crystal clear waters.

Friendship Leather

by Cathy&Gary

If you are after any leather goods to be made like, shoes, boots, jackets, coats, handbags or even air brushing then Friendship Leather is the place to go.

They have been around for a long time, we first went there over 10 years ago so a friend could have some airbrushing done on his jacket. It looked fantastic!

They have many catalogues and magazines you can choose from or take a photo of your own and they will copy it exactly at a fraction of the price.

I recently had a pair of boots made, they were in a magazine for $900, I paid $124 for an exact copy of them and they are so comfortable.

Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time, my boots were not ready on the date they gave me and I had to go back 2 more times, finally they were finished the morning we were leaving Phuket.

Your measurements are kept for five years, so if you want anything else made they will make it and then ship it to you. Leather jackets range from 8000 to 10,000baht. There is also a large selection of ready made leather goods for sale.

The photos below are from a friend who had 2 pair of boots made, the price was $110 a pair and she loves them so much she has ordered more in different colors.

Riding around Phuket

by libero48

Getting around Phuket on a motorbike is a must!!

Not only is it convenient, it is also very affordable starting from Baht150 / Day for a Moped. I had a great time going around Phuket in the 2 days I rented the bike. Phuket is a nice size for covering and it is quite easy getting around as the network of road is fairly simple connecting major towns and directions to each place before the junctions.

Be advised that though I had a great time riding in Phuket, the roads in Phuket at some parts might be windy and up and down some steep terrain so do exercise caution and some areas it is only 2 lanes so again be careful when overtaking or when being overtaken.

When renting the bike, the shop might request that you leave your passport with them. A better option would be to leave a photocopy of your passport with them or the most your driver's licence. They might also request that you leave a deposit with them but do decline as you might not see the deposit when you return with the bike and coax them to accept the photocopy of the passport. If they seem unwilling, you can always try the next shop.

If you are renting for 2 days or more, you should be able to get a better deal so do negotiate on the price before settling on renting the motorbike.
