Advice on how to spend 6 days in and around Phuket

by sauravrc

Hi,

We do not like lounging all day on the beach. So we would like advice on How to spend time doing things in Phuket and the nearby islands (if so which islands) and should we spend time at the Khao San national park?

We also have a 6 year old with us, so do not want to travel to Koh tao but want o enjoy in and around Phuket

Any help wil be appreciated

You can take a day trip to phuket town, do a Phang Nga Bay day tour, take a day trip to Phi Phi Island, or a snokelling trip close to Phuket.

Khao Sok is 3 hours away and you should stay for at least a night to make the trip worthwhile. You can go kayaking, hiking, swimming there.

There are little day trips you can do...lots of agencies around offering them, I loved the trip to "James Bond Island" known originally and locally as Ko Tapu or Nail Island. The scenery is amazing .Karen Beach is where we stayed and is not that far from Phuket. Its less busy and might make a nice get a way.
Its a beautiful area. You'll see lots of tailors offering to fit you at bargain prices. We couldn't resist. The food is great too.

My favorite day trip in Phuket was to James Bond Island. James bond island itself is not that exciting but the islands around it are amazing and the best bit was kayaking through caves into secluded lagoons in the middle of islands. Several people had children with them. You get someone who paddles the canoe for you and your child can sit in front with you. Elephant rides would also be exciting for a 6 year old.

Travel Tips for Phuket

langkawi to phuket

by rajanmm

Langkawi to phuket
One goes to Phuket from langkawi, by ferry to satun jetty (one and half hour)and then by bus from satun to phuket town (six abd half hour).
Book your tickets for Satun on arrival to langkawi by ferry, the counter for booking ferry to satun jetty is just outside ferry terminal langkawi, behind kentucky, the cost is 30 MR
Yes one can get visa on arrival at the satun jetty do that first and then go to immgigration for stamping of your passport.
After that book from satun jetty for bus from, satun bus stand to phuket town ( for 350 baht from bus stand to phuket, and 50baht by tuk tuk to bus stand total 400 baht approx avoid paying more in langkawi)

The best part is upto march 2011 there is no charge of 1000baht for visa on arrival for thailand.

Try to reach phuket town between 6am to 6pm as you get buses then, to any of the beaches for 25baht, by taxi the charge is 400 baht
phuket is a nice place where you can hire a bike for 200 baht for 24 hours

Why Wai ???

by Ozzy-Cambo

I found the Thai's respected that we had taken the time to learn how to Wai and some basic phrases prior to arriving. Wai, if you don't know is a bow with your hands together in front of your face with your thumbs about on the tip of your chin, used as a greeting. The Thai's also have a great sense of humour, much like the Aussie sense of humour and love to learn Aussie phrases and what they mean, I taught one young Thai what "having a perve" meant, he loved it and laughed every time he saw us. Use the web link below to learn some basic Thai.

Dive Koh Doc Mai and Phi Phi islands

by trisanna

We went diving with Santana diving (which were great) and went on three dives, two at Koh Doc Mai and another by an island (Koh Bida Nok) off of Phi Phi Le. As it's August and their off season. During this time, it may be better to dive Racha Yai, since it's sheltered. Where we dived, there was a little bit of current. Very rough around Phi Phi islands. Got really banged up trying to get into the boat. Visibility around 10 meters or so. Saw lionfish, shrimp, scorpion fish, large colorful schools of fish. Beautiful large pink sea fans at Koh Doc Mai. The highlight of the dive was seeing a gentle and stunning leopard shark, which swam right up to us. A cobia fish accompanied the large shark, which is rare, since they usually swim with whale sharks. Sadly, we didn't see any whale sharks.

Bargain with a Smile

by pammo about Kamala Beach shop (name unknown)

Here you will find a variety of typical Thai clothing items to choose from (shirts, shorts, sarongs, dresses, bikinis, etc.) plus a variety of local crafts.

The sisters working here are fun, friendly and chatty, so it is nice just to drop in an have a conversation while you browse. No pressure to buy. I purchased a variety of items, but take your pick. The beach bandanas are cute, cheap and practical (no sunburnt head). Less than 50 baht to more than 250 baht depending on the item you buy.

A new experience

by Cal79 about Bangla Road

I just recently returned from my first trip to Thailand and I was a bit blown away with what we encountered. An abundance of beautiful girls and some other interesting variations on that theme, ie. ladyboys. Loads of bars and good live music all within a few blocks of Patong Beach. Certainly entertaining and met lots of really friendly people, not always looking for sex. A highly energised environment, perhaps moreso after a coupla quiet Singhas. Worth the experience, definitely ! None apparent.
