16 nights in Phuket - am I going to go insane??!

by hayleyoz

Hi guys,

I'm moving back to Australia from the UK. We decided to book a cheap holiday on the way home - we're meant have a week in Bangkok and then the rest of the trip at Kata Beach in late June / early July. Given all that is going on in Bangkok at the moment, we've decided to spend the whole time in Phuket. As we're not really package holiday types, I'm starting to worry that we'll go insane with the jet ski / sarong sellers / hamburger joints. Does Phuket have more to offer? I love swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, cooking lessons, walking, etc. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hayley :)

Hi

I have been to Thailand before but never Phuket and am going this July from 10 - 17 and so have been doing a little research.

I suggest that you hire a car for a day or two and drive into Southern Phuket which is joined to the mainland by a bridge. Apparrently its very beautiful and there is a nature reserve there as well.

There are cooking courses (Momma Tri - very expensive but google it and you can find affordable 1/2/3 day courses as well)

I did a Thai massage course in Chiangmai years ago and that is always an option and you will be loved for life by EVERYONE.

Hayley, basing yourself in Kata Beach is great because it is away from the hordes in Patong, has good local cafes, has a good beach with clear water, and is convenient for local walks especially over the hill to Kata Noi which is gorgeous. From there you can still organise cooking lessons and other activities as there are local travel agents in Kata village. I also had a couple of business suits made at a tailor there which I am still wearing regularly after 3 years and they are fine. 16 nights is a long time but if you want to chill then Kata Beach is a good place; fairly quiet but still with options for food, walks, etc.

Phuket is great simply beacause you can do as little or as much as you want.

The jet ski/sarong sellers/hamburger joints are concentrated mainly around Patong Beach but there are lots of other quieter beach areas such at Kata and Karon.

The island itself is facinating and the fishing villages on the eastern coast are worth a look. If you tire of haggling at the markets there is a reasonable shopping centre in Phuket Town.

You can hire a driver quite cheaply and can cover a lot of ground in a day. I wouldn't suggest driving yourself (especially not on a scooter).

Phuket is a very friendly place and I'm quite jealous that you have 16 days to enjoy it.

Thank you everyone! Your responses are really helpful and I'm now feeling much more excited about the trip. It's greatly appreciated :)

Perhaps you could split you time by staying at 2 or 3 different locations as this would break things up a bit. We are going in November for a few days and staying at Kamala Bay.

Travel Tips for Phuket

General tips for Phuket

by bulldogtwo

Probably the closest jungle setting is Khao Sok national Park. To get there, there are many vehicle rentals and motorcycle agencies all over the island, usually for decent rates.
As you drive the roads, at least once you get off Phuket island, on hiway 4 going north to Khao Sok there are many signs indicating waterfalls, almost all of them are within reach of the main roads, some a couple hundred yard or a couple kilometers. They are great to swim in if they are deep enough or wade in to cool off. We usually make it a point to stop off at all we come across for the natural beauty if not to take a quick dip in.
Retsuarants on Phuket; depend a loton what you call decent. I love the local food and street stalls, we find many of the really pricey places are just that, good food but not really worth the price. Momma Tri's is supposed to be a good place but I'll leave you a link to a food guide and you can find one you'd like to try.
Sorry, no info on the massage places but I know there are several, ask the locals and they can direct you.

Luggage & Bags

by Cathy&Gary

As most of us can only bring back 20 kilos of luggage (not counting hand luggage) make sure you have lightweight suitcases, our cases are huge but only weigh just under 5kilos.

Dont bring home anything you can do without. Throw (give) away all your toiletries eg, shampoos, conditioners, deodorants etc, all these little things add up in weight.

Load up your hand luggage with any heavy items you have bought, its amazing how much shopping you can cram into a backpack.

Happy Shopping!!

Phang Nga Bay limestone caves

by keeweechic

Phang Nga Bay is home to many limestone caves or 'hongs'. It is believed that the first visitors to the caves were most likely Chinese fishermen. Here many centuries ago they found swallow nests which were worth a considerably amount in China for their medicinal value.

Thai Post - Posting Goods Home

by Cathy&Gary

Posting Goods Home via Thailand Post

Recently we sent a carton of clothes & goodies home to Australia from Phuket. I bought the biggest packing carton from the Post Office and it cost 40baht.

Packed and sealed it up myself back at the hotel (apparently the Post Office will do it for you at a price)

The carton weighed nearly 18 kilos and cost 3060baht to send door to door economy air, this takes 3 – 4 weeks.

The carton arrived in just under 4 weeks. So for the convenience and the price I would definitely use Thailand Post again.

There is a Post office in Soi Post Office up the southern end of Patong beach and one up the northern end on Rat-u-Thit Rd next to Nicky's Handlebar.

Our parcel from Chiang Mai to Australia weighed just over 11 kilos and cost 3,000baht for door to door service, this parcel arrived in 4 weeks.
