Royal Palm Resortel: Right across the beach
The location was fantastic, with Patong Beach right across the road. Stepped out of the hotel from the lobby and you ran smack right into the middle of a night flea market. All around it were shops, malls, restaurants, eateries and a Starbucks Cafe.
The room was nothing to shout about. Simple fare; functional. The view however was terrible as the view from my room stared right into the kitchen (or to be precise the rubbish chute part) of the restaurant next door. Also, fire safety was suspicious as there were no fire escapes - there was only 1 exit point - the common stairs. The corridor was sealed off on the other end by a thick glass and cement wall, which made the corridor dim & musty.
The breakfast spread was however, good and sumptuous.
Unique Quality: The location - right across from Patong Beach!

Hotel by the beach
The stay was generally pleasant, with friendly and polite staff. Rooms were pretty comfortable.
Bathrooms are not too good though. Showers leak and flushing system isn't strong.
Breakfast was disappointing. Not much of a variety, not of satisfactory standards. Fine if stuck to bacon and toast with jam and butter. No cereals provided.
There was a contrast between the hotel staff and the restaurant staff though.
Restaurant staff were less helpful and patient. When asked for less butter in omelettes, were met with annoyed expressions and the usual amount of butter went in anyway.
Unique Quality: Stairs were uneven. i.e. height of steps in the same flight were different, intervals were different. This resulted in a few trip ups for the group of us. Never seen such disorganised stairs!

Patong beach Accomodation
Royal Palm Resort was a sort of an average resort. The services in terms of cleanliness, room service, hospitality was average. The hotel was totally devastated in Last year's Tsunami because of its proximity to the Patong Beach. But they have reconstructed and back in action now. When we saw the location of the hotel in the website, we assumed that they must be having sea view rooms but was surprised, none of their rooms was sea facing. This is a three storey building hotel, hence no lifts. They have a tiny swimming pool at the terrace with no showers facility in the immediate vicinity. We had difficulty in locating the shower room and when we did locate it, didnt feel like taking a shower. The bath was stinking and seemed as if it hae not been cleaned since ages. The breakfast provided in the hotel was also just average. Bread, butter, jam and Fruit juice/tea with some fried rice, hams thrown in . The people at reception were helpful, but on the day of checking in, we had trouble getting hold of the room. The previous occupant of the room checked out late and we had to wait near the reception with our luggage and kids. This was very frustrating and humiliating.
Unique Quality: As mentioned earlier the reception staff were helpful. The seafood provided by the restaurant in the evening was quite good and reasonably priced. I liked the seafood platter which is served with local blend of cocktails

Good location at affordable price
I was looking for an affordable hotel at Patong Beach, Phuket. The peak season rates during Christmas have pushed the rates of all the hotels/resorts sky high! Resorts that were normally affordable is now beyond my budget.
My criteria is
1) Affordable price (I'm on a budget)
2) Very near the beach
3) Right in the heart of Patong Beach
After much searching throught the internet, I found The Royal Palm Resortel. The peak charges (Christmas period) for standard twin room is 2800THB/room/night. Expensive by Thai standard but very reasonable compared to other resorts in Patong area. Plus they have cancelled the compulsory 2000THB/per pax Christmas Gala dinner, what a relieve.
The standard twin room is really small, with a bathroom with shower/tub. The room is not the nicest, I have to say. The walls are unpainted or yellowist. Staying on the 4th floor, I can hear frequent noise from the piping, which can get quite loud at times. There is no lift, so you climb! There is a small balcony, which is good for drying my wet clothes. I can also catch a glimpse of the sea from the balcony.
The good thing about Royal Palm is the location. Right on the main beach road, facing the beach and the sea. Also, it is conveniently located near KFC, MacDonald's, Starbucks, Ocean Plaza, etc. Another plus point is the hotel is some distance from the sleazy bars of Bangla Road. It's surrounded by shops and restaurants.
It has a small swimming pool and jacuzzi on the roof. There is also a spa on the roof, which you can get Thai massage or other spa treatments for very affordable prices. You can also have the massage in your room if you want.
Unique Quality: Great location. Near beach. Cheap spa. Affordable room rates.

Where we were at
The hotel was holding a function on one of the evenings and the music was very loud, until past midnight. The next day, there was also a power failure, that was restored quickly enough. It's comfortable enough for an average hotel of 3 stars. The staff are not very friendly or efficient.
Unique Quality: Nothing quite unique except for its good location. Next to Watson's so you can buy whatever 'emergency commercial necessities' (eg. water, snacks, band-aid's, etc.) at a rather affordable price. Almost next to Scuba Cat and near Dive the World, and all the other dive schools. Facing the beach. Not very noisy and the area is not sleazy because the bars are some distance away. Easy to get a tuk tuk from right in front of hotel and many shops around.
