Kata Beach - 1996
I first went to Kata Beach in 1992 and it was a little piece of heaven. When I returned in 1996 it hadn't changed much.
However, when I next went there (in 2003) I couldn't believe what I saw. See next tip.

any suggestions or warns for me to travel alone in phuket? staying at patong lodge..
by the way..im only going for a short trip, 3 days two night...still hv no idea hw to plan my trip as im going alone...
thanks for your reply...actually im quite worry about transportation charges also...do you know roughly about how much to take tuktuk from hotel to the patong beach? and i heard that there is motor which they use it as a taxi, will it cheaper and safe? i thought patong lodge is near by the beach which is walkable...besides, i plan to take bus to phuket town, but not sure when and where to take it..really appreciate your reply very much...thanks again..^^
Last time I went to Patong I stayed at Mercura Patong and walked everywhere. No way would I give those tuk tuk leaches my hard earned cash.
is it very far to walk to patong beach or any night market from patong lodge hotel? cause if it is possible to walk there, i prefer to walk..
erm...by the way,is the hotel not really nice??
Phuket's 'Sin city' is relegated to the area of a lane called Soi Bangla. Patong is great for a holiday; pls don't let the advice of someone who's been in the area too long put you off. Yes, it's very safe for a solo-traveler as long as you play it safe.
Other beaches such as Kata and Nai Harn etc...are excellent if it's a quaint laid back destination you are seeking. If on the other hand it's a vibrant fun-packed holiday, then stick to Patong. It really depends on what kind of holiday you want, it's your final decision. But for me, and i've been going there for almost 20 years, Patong is still very all right.

an empty suitcase what you have on at the airport, and your own undies. all personal products are expensive in thailand so bring your own, and alot of sunscreen for the day and insect repellant for night. camera and heaps of film, or memory cards. duty free bourbon, thai bourbon isn't the nicest.
This is not the right section for this, but I would like to strongly recommend a tour company, if you are into taking group guided tours, which we were. They are Tour East and we took about 5 day tours with them over the 2 weeks, and never once had one single trouble. They operate all though Thailand, and other Asian countries, as far as I know.

This bus service is the cheapest out of all methods to/from the airport.
It only costs 85B one way (foreigner price), much cheaper than coupon taxi, tuk tuk and minivan.
