Phuket with family

by Hanlie

Hi, we will be traveling to Phuket in September. We have two small children.

I have a few questions:

1. We are looking for something on either Kata or Karon beaches. I have heard that those are really beautiful and quieter than the others?
2. Good place to stay with kids, good price, near to beach and restaurants/shopping.
3. What do you suggest for airport transfer? Hotel transfer or taxi? Also, staying at these beaches, what would the going rate be for a taxi?
4. Where would be the best place to buy Phi-Phi island tour?

Thanks a mil!
Hanlie

Kata and Karon in September is not bad and there are restaurants nearby. Taxi is always cheaper than a hotel transfer. There are metered taxi from the airport, but I recently heard that the metered taxi don't use the meter any more but go on a fix rate, but I can't confirm it. For PP Island Tour, just about any tour agents can arrange it for you. Just shop around for the best price as they are all the same.

Kata Beach Resort has specials sometimes that give you great value and its right on Kata Beach. The resort is really comfortable and there is a 7-Eleven across the road and local restaurants. There are also good and inexpensive tailors.

Hi.

Phuket in September woul dbe the least good month to be honest. This is both statisticly over 50 years and personal thought as I used to live on Phuket before I moved to the lovelu Koh Samui.

Between Karon and Kata my vote is Kata 100%. I dont want to scare you but the ocean on Phuket during the monsoon kills people every year and this year several people have drowned already. Red flag means DONT TOUCH THE WATER, please remember that. When the rips currents are strong there are big danger being even in 5cm water and less.

Kata is a lovely place in general i think, but summer and winter times are extremely different, not least the ocean that to 100% will have big waves during your stay. I would personally visit the east coast like Samui or Phangan or so.

About transfer, the meter taxis are set on your right hand side when you exit the terminal. There are a small place where you order your taxi and i guess the bill will be somewhere around 700 bath to Kata.

Trips to Phi Phi island are many times not available during this time of the year due to the ocean condition but sometimes they are.

Here you have a list with the most popular hotels in Kata. and also a link to the Phuket weather.

I hope you get a great time anyways :D

yeah. kata and karon are much quieter. i felt quite boring but i liked the place. i guess all of posh hotels are situated in these areas. try www.agoda.com its perfect for the family.if you wish to travel with family i suggest rent a car.Renting car shall cost B1200/day depending on the model/type of vehicle you wish to rent....Patong and surrounded area is more vibrant. From Airport it should not take more than B400 for taxi.

I answer your the third and the forth question.
3. airport transfer, you can book a round transfer from websit or agent in phuket.the price maybe a bit high, but it is very convenient.
4.you can visite this web and book Phi phi island tour:http://www.phuket-fit.com/packages_info.php?daytour_id=MQ==

Travel Tips for Phuket

Phuket choice

by Stepwalk

Phuket is really an island of contrasts: some wonderful natural beauty especially the beaches but the heavy tourist areas such as Patong are not for everybody. Those areas are certainly not a genuine Thai cultural experience, they are overcrowded, and they are seedy, but many people flock there year after year so it must have wide appeal. I stayed in Kata Beach away from most of the hordes and enjoyed it. My view is that you should include Phuket and make your own assessment on it. If you are going on tours such as Phi Phi Island try to get information on when most of the tourist boats go there and avoid those times: it is hell! White sand, clear water, palm trees.

Presents for Children overseas

by nezz

When you travel overseas people are always so interested in where we the traveller come from. A picture book with photos of Australian animals and/or scenery would probably be a good idea. Someone recently told me they took a small atlas for use in a primary school. I agree the colouring book with pencils, textas or paints would be great especially if it features Australian animals. Good quality art paper is very hard to come by in other countries (so expensive) so next time I plan to take some artist sketch pads with me and the proper soft lead pencils for sketching as these we found hard to find. Balloons are a wonderful idea as we tried to buy some in Bali for my Mum's birthday & they burst as we blew them up. whatever you take will be greatly appreciated by the children & their family. Enjoy Phuket we love it

Take a bike...

by tashka

Take a bike and explore the surroundings of your hotel. In my case I took a mountain bike in the hotel and rode to a small waterfall a couple of kilometers away from Panwa Beach Resort (I guess, you can also reach it from Cape Panwa Hotel).

Warning: if you do it, then do it either in the morning or after 4 pm, otherwise you'll end with a sunstroke. And take a bottle of water with you. And a camera! Cause most probably you will see some interesting views.

Warning 2: I wouldn't risk riding a motorbike in Thailand.

Ocean Plaza

by imstress about Ocean Plaza

We came across both branches of Ocean Plaza in Patong Beach. First was the branch at Thaweewong Road and the other one is located in the middle of Bangla Road.

It is relatively small compared to other malls like Junceylon, Central Festival, Big C, Tesco Lotus. They do have a few level of shopping.

Brought some cosmetics and nail polishes for THB20 onwards. Nail Polish THB27 each

Dancing in Patong, Phuket

by stappm about Tiger Bar/Nightclub

Tiger is a great place to dance, dance and keep dancing. Mixed crowd of tourists, expats, and locals. The place really gets going after midnite, and has great ventalation (doesn't get smoky) Really fun place. Skip the Banana Club, unless you like loud Techno and cigarette smoke.
