Homestay in Kekirdek: Sleeping under the stars or in a yurt

From Ashgabat we head north into the desert to stay in a private house at the edge of the sanddunes in the small nomad village Kekirdek. This homestay was arranged by the travel agent DN tours in Ashgabat. The owner of the house and two of his daughters waited for us at the edge of the village to guide us to his compound and house.

We were welcomed with tea. We could sleep at a wooden floor, built at about 50 cm above the ground. This was the place where you could catch a little breeze if there is any. At the same place we had our meals (picture1 &3).

The other place where we could sleep was in the traditional yurt (picture 2) with its colourful interior (picture 3 & 5). I decided to sleep in the yurt, though it was a little bit warmer than outdoors.

It was great to stay with the local family. They had a camel with a baby camel, some goats, a dog and some kitties. We could watch how they prepared the local food for us. We made a walk into the dunes and in the village. We got interesting explanations about the life in the desert village and the local customs of nomadic life.

Hotel Turkmenistan: Hotelroom with view at the Arch of Neutrality

In Ashgabat we stayed the centrally located hotel Turkmenistan. This hotel is not far from the museums and the presidential palace just behind the Arch of Neutrality. From our hotelroom we could see the golden statue of the president at top of the arch and watched how this statue turned around during the day, depending of where the sun was.

The outside of the hotel looked bright in white and green colours. The inside, especially the corridors and rooms had a dark atmosphere. The rooms were ok, luckily with airco and the bathroom was working well. We had a quite room at the backside of the hotel. The breakfast includes pancake, baked eggs, cheese, bread, yoghurt , tea and coffee.

Ekayev Gaibnazar and his wife Enebai: Best accomodation in Turkmenistan

In Nokhur you will have no possibility. Chandybil tourist base has been destroyed, but this is a better axccomodation, in order to know and interact with local people...they are a great family!
(Basic toilets)

Unique hospitality...they are friendly and so kind...it seems to be a part of the family!

Akkah Tekke Horses at the...

Akkah Tekke Horses at the Hippodrome in Ashkabad. Some are for sale, and all need more food! There are several events during the year taht have these horses at the heart of them. Many focus on getting them food, while others focus on a breeding program to preserve the dwindling genetic pool. Believe it or not in Ashgabad thair are 4 and 5 star hotels, fo rforeigners. YOu get the feeling you are the only one their. I think they are for show. I cannot imagine Marriot running such a large facility for a few guests per week!
