City Hotel: Convenient, conjenial, comfortable ...
Tucked away in a quiet court off the end of University Boulevard, the dividing line between old (ie Uzbek) and new (Russian) Samarkand, the City Hotel was only built in 2007. It offers spacious rooms, quiet nights, efficient service and a good breakfast - what more do you need? It's not luxurious but it's very comfortable. The desk staff were great, more than obliging and fun to boot - we enjoyed our contact with them enormously.
The location places it within a 10 minute walk of the Registan and the Gur Amir. University Boulevard is a elegant tree-lined avenue, a kilometre or so long - an early morning walk will take you past several handsome buildings, many of which form part of the university campus. Walk all the way to the end and you can give a passing nod to the Emir himself - Timur sits on a throne surveying his domain - it's changed a bit since his day. The Russian Orthodox Cathedral is just around the corner, as are a couple of good restaurants - we ate at one called The Old Donkey Cart, good food and a pleasant evening stroll to and from the place.

Hotel Timur the Great: Private Hotel just off the Registan
Family run, this small hotel/Bed and Breakfast is just a short walk from the Registan. They are friendly and offer an excellent tea. Good jam, peanuts and garbanzo beans/chicpeas, bread and, of course, tea.
Four images.

Hotel President: Why Bother?
Didn't stay here, but it looked a bit run down for what is supposedly one of the nice hotels in town.
Unique Quality: Don't use the exchange office, or, if you do, count your money and get and exchange receipt!

Kamila Hotel: Kamila Hotel
This hotel might not be the easiest place to find at first but once you arrive there, you'll know that it's in walking distance to everywhere. The owner is nice though he doesn't know English. Breakfast was great. Hot water was working fine though I didn't really need it as it was in summer. Air-con worked well.

Zarina B & B: Friendly - and oh so central!
This rivalled the Hotel Mosque Baland in Bukhara as the most friendly we stayed in on our travels, and definitely took the prize for “best location”! It’s a friendly family-run hotel only a few minutes’ walk from the Registan and set back from the main road in a quiet cul de sac. Our room wasn’t large but it was clean, with an en-suite bathroom and air-conditioning (though the latter wasn’t as efficient as I’d have liked in that heat.)
The rooms are arranged in two blocks around a central courtyard, with a small swimming pool that unfortunately was empty on our visit. A raised area at one end of the courtyard has several tables with bench seating, and a traditional seating platform, where we enjoyed relaxing after sightseeing over a cold drink. The hotel sold a selection of these – water, Coke, Sprite and local beers – at reasonable prices.
The breakfast served is a fairly typical Uzbek buffet selection of breads, jam, cheeses, meat, biscuits, juice, tea and instant coffee. Our guidebook gives the cost of a stay here as $20 for a single room, $30 for a double, which represents good value for such a great location.
Unique Quality: The family are obviously keen collectors because the basement breakfast room has displays of old radios, musical instruments, a Russian adding machine and more! The courtyard too is scattered with old carved doors and other architectural salvage items (see photo 4) and the columns supporting the front porch seemed to be antiques too.

Hotel Sherdor: Good hotel in Samarqand
In front of the polish church and not far from the park it was a very good choice. Rooms are correct, there is a central courtyard with chikhanas to have breakfast and dinner and the staff is very kind and helpful (this is very important if you don't speak neither russian nor uzbek!).
Not far from the hotel you have two restaurants,a supermarket and of course, there is the park and some caffés so you don't need to go to the center to enjoy your free time.
3stars hotel, clean and nice.
Unique Quality: I think there is a sauna and you can ask for massages too. There is internet but only in the computer of the reception so you can only use it when the staff is not busy.

Hotel Malika: In the suburbs
This hotel is part of the Malika chain. Rooms are simply furnished, but equipped with private facilities, hairdryer, air-con and satelllite TV.
The hotel is built around two courtyards. There is a small restaurant where a basic breakfast buffet is served. You can also have dinner here, but you need to order it with reception 3 hours in advance. We did this one evening, and had a very tasty meal of stuffed vegetables.
Unique Quality: The main problem with the hotel is that it is in the suburbs, a taxi ride away from the main sights.
There is also no internet access for guests, although there are two internet cafes within a 20 minute walk.

Bahodir B&B – simply the best
After having read both VT and LP recommendations for Samarkand hostels, I had no doubt that Bahodir B&B would be my first choice. It was near Registan and it was said to be a popular backpackers hangout (so my kind of place anyhow). It was a perfect decision, and still today, half year later, I often think back to this lovely family and their priceless hospitality. The B&B is a family run business; Bahodir, his wife and the elder family members don’t speak much English – but who needs this ? Their smiles tell more than any word ! Both sons speak quite good English.
The hostel is located in (what is said to be) a typical Uzbek house: big entrance portal opens to a small yard with stairs to upper floor rooms and a small hallway to the big courtyard with rooms in the basement and upstairs. In the courtyard, I had the choice between sitting at 2 big tables or relax on a tapchan. It is quite shady here, a welcome retreat of Samarkand’s brutal summer heat.
Bahodir and family are magic people: as soon as I approached the door, a smiling member opened me, and next I was offered tea or coffee, together with either fresh watermelon, cake, cookies and freshly squeezed juice. Tea is illimited, they must brew hectolitres per day !
Unique Quality: Rooms are very spacious with bathroom (hot shower and toilet). Mine had no aircondition, but a ventilator (which I preferred anyhow). Breakfast is included, rice pudding, eggs, bread, cheese, cold cuts and jam, plus coffee or tea and a yummie yoghurt drink. Sometimes I also had dinner here, for 1 USD per person.
In the evenings, the courtyard is packed with travellers of all age and all places you can imagine. Mostly they were on the way to China or came from there, so lots of fun discussions guaranteed.
Laundry service as well; they have a washing machine.
Price: I paid 8 USD per night (incl. breakfast).
I didn't take many pictures inside (simply forgot - blame it on the heat), but the website below shows pictures as I saw it during my stay.

Hotel Kamila **: A mirror palace
I stayed here for three nights.
Breakfast is served at the table: bread, pancakes, eggs, fruit.
I was told the owner was a former KGB boss. This could explain the large number of mirrors used in the room. Even the doors have mirror glass, but you can look through them if the light is on at the other site. I felt a bit strange at first: is somebody watching us from the other site?
Toilet is separated from the bathroom and are in the hall of the room. Bathroom contains a shower and a washing table. Per two rooms you haven an extra hall whit a fridge.
The rooms have air-co an television. We had a triple room.
Unique Quality: Nice atmosphere, near the registan (15 minutes walk). Cosy garden with uzbek bed chair for relaxing. Friendly employees.
Open the gate and be surprised about what lies behind it.
