We had found a room our first night in Saigon but were unhappy about the overall cleanliness. So, in the morning, I went room hunting while Doreen slept a couple extra hours. I checked a lot of places but was intrigued by one tailor shop that had a sign advertising rooms for rent. I went in and asked the seamstress about her rooms and she said she had one for $8. I asked to see it and was surprised when not only she took me up three flights of spiraling stairs to see it but also her pretty assistant. Once in the room, it was obvious that my $8 would not only get me a room. It was a nice room so I told her I would take it and they were both perplexed when I said I would be back in an hour with my girlfriend! On my return with Doreen in tow, I was told that the room was now $12. We got a room across the street for aforementioned price.
Across the street, we were told they had a room, but it had to be cleaned. We went up to see it anyway and found a “maid” sleeping soundly in our future bed. The owner jarred her from her slumber and told her to move in so many Vietnamese words. She did and we were told the room was ours. Not entirely satisfied with this maid service, we pulled the sheets off the bed and asked for another set. We put them on and still slept in our sleep sacks. Other than that, it was a great room with a very cold air conditioner. The location was great, very close to lots of places to eat and drink. On my scouting expedition, I found the Capital Laundry at 107 Bui Vien that also offered rooms. It was by far the nicest room I saw with a balcony, lots of plants, and was well worth the $10 they were asking. It was full but I would certainly go back there if I was ever in Saigon again. | | | | Caravelle Hotel: Stay in the heart of Dong Khoi Area Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
This is a five-star, cushy hotel, smack right in the major shopping district of HCMC. So it's not surprising to find that it's a tad pricey compared to other hotels. Apart from the price however, expect top-notch service from this swanky place , warm smiles from staff, great views from the room and an excellent watering hole (Saigon Saigon) on the 9th floor. Of course, you'll wonder why the hell did ol' bpacker choose to stay there right? Well I wouldn't be here if not for hubby..
This hotel has a lovely lobby that overlooks the Grand Opera House. Guess you can say they have a grand entrance. Also, they have genuine bath salt in the bathroom for your soaking needs. Hmm lovely, I did just that after an exhausting day of crawling around the cu chi tunnel. | | | | Guesthouse Phạm Ngọc Thạch: A Place For The Very Few | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The place where my nephew, his wife, and their close friends stay every time they are in Saigon is not mentioned in any travel guide or listed in the city’s tourist information; it is usually full even though it does not advertise itself. In fact, it does not even have a name. It is called simply “Guesthouse.” The fact that it is ran by the government is the only explanation for its low-key existence. Before 1975, it was a private villa, quiet and elegant, as many quiet and elegant villas in Saigon. Behind the high gate, there was a large tree with a profuse amount of fragrant white blossoms called “ngọc lan” (michelia alba or white champaca). The perfume of ngọc lan was the most potent of all flowers, even stronger than jasmine, and with thick and glossy foliage that spread wide and dense, this was one of the two types of trees grown behind the gates of all villas in the city. The villa was confiscated by the new regime after 1975, as all the villas in the city, for one reason or another. The tree died (or chopped down) shortly afterward, and the gate of the quietly elegant house opened out to the government officials and their visitors. Forward to the end of the ‘90s, the villa became a guesthouse, one of the few guesthouses ran by the government. Very people know of this accommodation because in order to stay here, one needs to have an inside knowledge or a reference. The rooms are large, bright, comfortable, and exceptionally clean, the rate is low (US$17 for a double room and US$24 for a junior suite), the atmosphere is serene, the staff is discreet, there is not one negative thing I can find about the place. I even appreciate the house rules, one of them being guests cannot have unannounced visitors, especially of the opposite gender. Too strict, you say? Not if you understand that, this is not a hotel, but a guesthouse. When you are here, you are a guest of the owner -- though a paying guest -- and this villa, although no longer private, still has a reputation to maintain.
It's not a hotel, a motel, or a pension. It is called guesthouse but it is not an average guesthouse. It is one of the few villas left in the city. It is a very quiet place to relax and remove oneself from the hubbubs of the city, but it is located on a busy street. The old University Quarter is at the end of the avenue, good restaurants are a few steps away, and there are plenty of old Saigonites in the area who always have time to partake a story or two. (That will be the best part of your trip, since you cannot learn about Saigon by following advices from guidebooks, you need to be with the old residents who have been through all, seen all, and live to tell.) Note: Since this tip was posted a year ago, I have received dozens and dozens requests for help with reservation for this special accommodation. Here is the scoop: The guesthouse does not have a website or email address, and although there is a telephone number, it is not designed to be used for reservation from outside of Vietnam. The only way to book a room is in person. At least one VTer had done that on the day of arrival and encountered no problem whatsoever. | | | | Madame Cuc's Hotel 64: Great Amazing Hostel! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The best hostel I have ever stayed in. Location was just great, very centralised. You can arrange for the hostel to pick you up from the airport for about US$5. The staff were helpful, warm and can get playful with you, once they get to know you better. Ran by an efficient team of ladies, they make you feel right at home. The rooms are basic, but spartan clean and comfortable. The staff see to that, banning foot ware from ever reaching the floors with the rooms by enforcing the rule that you deposit all foot ware on the shoe racks. For the price you pay, breakfast (delicious baguette and Vietnamese coffee) and dinner (noodles) are included. What more can you ask??
Great warm services. Nothing beats that! Services of a hotel in a hostel!! Note: Mdm Cuc also runs MC 184 Hotel and Hotel 127. Same chain. | | | | Grand Hotel: Location, comfort, service and value for money | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
We stayed here for 3 nights, in a very central location - and were not bothered by noise at all. The hotel itself was charming, the rooms were clean and comfortable, and all of the amenities in the room were in good condition. The breakfasts were excellent, and had the largest range I have seen. We were visiting as a family, and had 2 comfortable rooms. There were many restaurants nearby, and shopping easily accessed if required. We were close to the river, and travel booking shops, easily able to walk to most of the central city sights. Theme: HotelPrice: US$80-120 » Currency ConverterComparison: about average
