Mekong Boat Ride

by blacksnail

Hi, if we not to take a group tour, how much am i expecting to pay the Boat Ride to go around? thanks.

Re: Mekong Boat Ride

by icequeen_n_snow

from around $2/ hour.
I think there are a few government run offices around and they charge around $3.5/ hour. You should check with them first to get an ideas.

Re: Mekong Boat Ride

by blacksnail

oh really? thats very cheap.. do i still have to negotiate the price or is a fix price?

Re: Mekong Boat Ride

by icequeen_n_snow

For the tour office that's the fix priced. For the private boats it's that much give or takes few cents away. Imagine rowing a boat for an hour .. If you the motorboat then it's gonna be more expensive because of the gas price. But a rowing boat can only carry maximum 4 pax + 2 rowers.

Re: Mekong Boat Ride

by blacksnail

oh.. You mean the price u mentioned is for rowing? Do u know the motor boat price? We have 7 person

Re: Mekong Boat Ride

by icequeen_n_snow

I'm not really sure about motorboat sorry.

Re: Mekong Boat Ride

by icequeen_n_snow

Ok so I checked and small motorised boat ( can still only take 4 pax) costs around VND 30000/ hour. The big motorised boat for 7 pax - 10 pax/ boat will cost around VND 60000/ hour.

Just make sure you don't pay in usd. Bargain in vietnam dong give you the best price.

Ice Queen, can you recommend a 1/2 day tour from Soc Trang?

Re: Mekong Boat Ride

by icequeen_n_snow

The only place that sell Tour in Soc Trang that I've heard of is Soc Trang tourist Company. It's a local company but they only have 1 day and two days. You can try to contact them to work something out. http://www.soctrangtourism.com/eng/tours/default.html

Travel Tips for Ho Chi Minh City

Bring US Dollars

by TravelChick67

Most of the vendors we ran across really like you to pay in US dollars. It appears that US dollars are in fact, the underground currency around Vietnam. I would be careful about exchanging too much cash for Vietnamese Dong as it is useless (and worthless) outside of Vietnam.

Now, that doesn't mean it isn't fun to get some. How often do you get to hold 20,000 of any kind of money! LOL

But, make your exchanges in small amounts so if you get stuck with a few dong, it won't be more than a few dollars worth.

National Flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam

by xuessium

Inspired by the flag of the People's Republic of China, the National flag is derived from the flag of the Communist Party of Vietnam. Red is a socialist colour and the golden star represents communism. The five points of the star stand for the farmers, workers, intellectuals, youth and soldiers.

Different Perspective of Vietnam War

by machomikemd

The immediate image in the minds of most people at the mention of Vietnam is that of the war fought against the United States some twenty years ago. Most people think of the country only in terms of the American conflict in Indochina. The war ended nearly twenty years ago, and today, despite lingering signs of past American involvement, the situation in Vietnam is markedly different. People have finally begun to look at the country from another perspective, now that travelers and tourists from the West are being welcomed into what was once a forbidden country. It may take a bit more effort and tenacity to plan an excursion into Vietnam than it would for another Southeast Asian country, but Vietnam has much to offer in terms of culture and sights. hence see all my Sai Gon Tips!

Mekong Delta tour

by Smallprawn

There are tons of tour agencies offering trips to Mekong Delta, and I picked the recommended Sinh Cafe by the other tourists on VirtualTourist.com.

Whole day trip. Wear something light, and get something to change if you plan to go somewhere else after this trip, coz the trip will make u all sweaty and sticky. :P

River was yellowish at the time we were there (August 2006). The guide said the river would be clearer at the start of the year.

Poor workmanship and poor service

by xptraveler about Thuan Viet Ao Dai

Ao dai is the traditional Vietnamese tunic. Thuan Viet is the famous Vietnamese designer who has designed ao dai for numerous beauty pagent. His shop was recommended by the concierge at Park Hyatt. I went to the shop on Dong Khoi after looking at other shops on the same street. The dresses on display as well as the fabric were better than other shops so although they were more than double the prices of other places, I decided to purchase from them. I had high expectation but was thoroughly disappointed. Thuan Viet's ao dai can be very expensive depending on what fabric you choose as well as whether you have any embroidery. Dresses with embroidery can run upwards of US$500 + depending on the intricacies of the patterns. I picked my fabric and had my measurements taken. The next day I went back for my fitting and found that the dress was tight and the position of the darts was the chests were not right. Basically, the seams needed to altered to make the size bigger. The length was also too long as it covered the pants completely. I had to go back for a second fitting the next day. When I went back I was really disappointed to find that they had altered the length of the dress but not the lining. What made me even more upset was when they tried to cover up their mistakes and tell me that that's how it should be. I insisted that the lining be altered to the same length as the dress. They wanted me back for a third fitting the next day but I just didn't have time and asked that the dress be delivered to the hotel. When I finally wore the ao dai, I found that the stitchings were shabby and some of the seams were not tacted down properly as it should be done with a proper tailor and there were oil stains on the pants! For a famous tailor, they certainly did not do a good job and probably subcontracted the business out as they knew I was a tourist. Be very wary if you plan to go to this shop and don't believe them when they promise that things can be done in one day. You'll probably need to go for at least 2 - 3 fittings. Minimum US$120 plus and no discount what so ever.
