Money stolen from the room

During our three week holiday in Vietnam we stayed at Duna hotel for three days. The location is excellent, in the middle of Saigon. The rooms offer reasonable quality for the price. That is, if you don't count the 120 US Dollars that were stolen from one of our backpacks. Fortunately, we didn't keep any other valuables in the room. It can only have been stolen by staff since the room was locked and we left the key at the reception.

The hotel is closed early every night and it's a hassle to get in. Also, we booked one trip to Cu Chi at the travel-office in the hotel and were happy with that, so we decided to book our traintickets to Hoi An there as well. We later found out that Duna's travel office had sold us cheap reservations insisting they were expensive (soft-sleeper) tickets. Once you find out at the train station, there's not much you can do. Duna was by far our worst hotel-experience in Vietnam. So, not recommended, and there are plenty of good alternatives nearby!

Unique Quality: Its good location in the centre of Saigon, and the proximmity to all the highlights in Saigon.

Warm and cozy in Saigon

Duna Hotel is located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh in District 1. It is within walking distance to the museums and Ben Thanh market (where you can find load's of cheap and good souvenirs for family and friend's back home). Upon arrival, we were greeted by a warm and cheerful lady. The place is clean and the front-desk staff speaks good english. So, communication was never a problem. She helped us settle into our rooms and provided us with everything we requested for. In addition, there is also a travel desk in Duna Hotel and the lady was quite informative. She provided us with some useful information and help us arrange our sight-seeing trips to maximize our short 3D stay in HCM. Definitely recommended for anyone planning a trip to HCM City :)

Unique Quality: This is just a basic bed and breakfast accomodation in HCM City. Nothing flashy and the cost was only USD25 for a party of 3...

Good Value on Pham Ngu Lao

My stay was for four nights at the Duna hotel in the middle of the cheaper tourist area which seems to be named after one road, Pham Ngu Lao. I had an excellent room for just $20 per night which included a basic but filling breakfast.
The room itself was spacious, had aircon, TV and a fridge and a smallish but more than adequate bathroom. Although facilities at the hotel were pretty basic the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The best rooms were at the front of the hotel overlooking the street but even though they afforded a good view of the surrounding area if you are a light sleeper then ask for a room at the back.

Unique Quality: Good location near to entertainment, shopping and tour agencies. Friendly staff, clean rooms and all round good value. Ten minutes walk to Ben Thanh Market.

Value for Money in Saigon

by PA68 about Duna Hotel

This place was a great find. Very new, clean and great value for money. My room had AC. cable tv, fridge and private bathroom. The staff were very friendly and helpful and didn't try too hard to push tours, bus tickets etc as in many other hotels in Vietnam. A great find.

Couple of option:
Mogambo 20 Bis Thi Sach, D1 - small american run mini hotel with bar/restaurant downstairs
Star hotel next door
An An Hotel 40 Bui Vien D1 - in the backpacker area

They might be able to do an airport pickup, but its only about 25 mins in a taxi which will cost abot 3 to 4 dollars, make sure you get one from the taxi rank and that he turns the meter on

You might wish to try www.indochinehotel.com

Prices are from USD20 onwards.

Transport provided from Hotel cost USD10 (Advise: Take from airport's "meter" cab, it's cheaper)

I stayed at the Duna and it was very good if a little noisy being on the main Pham Ngu Lao Road. This road and the area that seems to get called by the same name is a great place to stay for budget but great value accommodation along with good eateries and travel agents.
One place getting very good reviews recently is the Linh hotel and I will be staying there on my next trip
