Golden central hotel, a good budget choice
by kellyrose
Last week our family went to hochiminh city for vacation, a staff from www.govietnamvisa.com where we got the visas helped us book a hotel in District 1, the Golden Central Hotel. it was a 4-star hotel, clean, tidy, friendly, good price (only $80) but a bit small, with very small swimming pool. yet the location is great, only 3 mins walk to Ben Thanh market. I think you may also consider Thanh Lien hotel, Residence sthing... hotel, or the White hotel, which are all about 3-4 star hotels with perfect location (near Golden central hotel).
Directions: District one, 3 mins walk to Ben Thanh market

Not worth the price
by T-sea-2012
Service staff is very unfriendly at the reception desk.
Hotel overall was underwhelming.
Definitely not worth the high prices, worth about $60, not $80-110.
Air conditioning system is very weak. The room beside ours had smokers in it and their smoke was filling our room through the air conditioning vent. The windows don't open so our room was full of smoke for the four day stay.
The "gym" is three pieces of equipement outside on the pool deck.
The restaurant is extremely overpriced.
The pool is a rooftop pool and it's tiny which is common for this area.
Unique Quality: Close to the Ben Thahn Market
Directions: District 1, Ben Thahn Market

From SGN Airport to District 1 in night?
by jay1970
Hello,
I found a lot of good info on this forum.
I am arriving at SGN around 11PM. I am planning to stay in Dist 1. What's the best mode of transportation to get to Dist 1? Is it safe to take taxi in the night? or should I ask hotel to arrange pickup? I haven't booked hotel yet but if hotel pickup is advised, I will look for hotel that has pickup services.
Thanks,
Jay

The taxis are fine at the airport, just try and get a Mai Linh or Vinataxi. Make sure they put the meter on, no need to bargain, you'll just end up paying more.

Get a taxi or have the hotel pick you up. I chose the latter and it worked fine.

Definitely take a taxi; it should be under 100,000 to District 1 (or under 6 USD). Some taxi companies cheat; I use Mai Linh (mentioned above) or Vinasun and have never been cheated by either company. I always use the taxi queue in front of the domestic terminal, as I have never worked out where else to find a taxi line. It is about 200 metres to the right when you come out of the international terminal - there is a trolley switch halfway!

the taxi rank is on the far left as you come out of departures

Street Names and the weird markings
by liemel225
yes, the names and the weird markings surrounding it. you have to be careful with this
if you are equipped with the address make sure that the marking are copied as well. the locals dont know how to read without this stuff.
I saw a lot of french...
by jlvillalba
I saw a lot of french influence, some parts of the city reminded to me Paris or Nice!!
his is the french Cathedral, named Notre-Dame (it sounds to me!!) with masses in Viet, French and English.
Lot of devoted go there, and my hearth sounds when I enter, very heartbreaker.
Lot of asian from Japan, Taiwan or Coreo go there to get married and have a honeymoon in the coast of Vietnam
Spiritual Healing
by Unknownsu
If you are confused as to why locals sometimes have circular bruise marks along the arms, legs, back, neck and sometimes face, the only explanation would be a spiritual remedy used to extract negative energy from a person's body.
Small glass pots are lighted and quickly placed on the patient causing a vacuum to draw out the impurities from the ill-fated person.
I personally wouldn't try this at home and wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless I truly hate that person but the Vietnamese are very confident this practice helps patients recover sooner.

Major department store
by albaaust about Tax
Tax is a major department store located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh city on the corner almost opposite the Rex hotel. It has many "stalls" of jewellery items including rings, bracelets, necklaces and errings. It also sells other items that you would find in any other department store. Prices seems reasonable.
