Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam

Grand Hotel
8 Dong Khoi Street, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, S.R. Vietnam / Tel: (84.8) 8230163 / Fax: (84.8) 8235781

The Grand Hotel is one of the oldest hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, built in 1930. The hotel has two buildings, one called the Old wing which still keeps the French colonial style and the other New wing is appointed in new style after big renovation in 1995. I was able to saty in the older part of the hotel and the rooms were enormous with very modern facilities.

Unique Quality: The hotel offers good services such as massage, sauna, jacuzzi, steambath. These services will help you refresh and feel better at reasonable price : Package : around US$8 Massage only : around US$5/hour.

Hotel with 1930's but modern + internet

For a three day stay in Ho Chi Minh for June 2010, I decided to book at the Grand Hotel because of the good reviews I read over the internet. Pictures of the hotel also show a nice charm about it, being from the 1930’s. I chose it over the newer hotels (like the 5-star New World) because the rooms appeared larger than the ones I saw pictured in the newer hotels. And they were…

When we arrived in the middle of the night, check-in was easy and the hotel looked just as it did in pictures. There is so much history in this hotel and there is a new wing and an old wing, which has more charm and looks over the pool…

I made sure we got a room at the Old Wing and we were carried up this steel elevator with so much character, haha....I think we were on the fourth floor and the pool could be seen below, very blue. The door of the room opened to a sitting area, which was shared by two rooms.

The rooms are of good size, and you are welcomed by a small plate of fruits. The bathrooms are also well-quipped and modernized with good amenities and toiletries. The beds are comfortable, and there is an in-room safe. The other thing I liked of course was the availability of free internet! Connection was okay, and I was able to get into VT, but not on Facebook (apparently banned in Vietnam).

The buffet is very good, and I think the choices also changed during the three days we stayed there. Lots of food and you would not get hungry, and it was also already included in the hotel price (unlike in other newer hotels in the area).

The hotel also has a massage parlor which we also availed of (but please be warned that you might be offered “extra services” in those parlors, haha). I think it was only $15 to have the massage. The “extra services” was a surprise for me since the hotel is a 3 ½ star hotel at the time, and gearing up to be 4-5 star. But I guess in Vietnam, the “massage boom-boom” as they call it, is quite rampant.

We found it easy to walk around and it is near major sights – we just got a map and did a walking tour ourselves to see the major sights in the city. We also left our luggage in the hotel as we did our walking tour and they were very professional in taking care of our belongings.

Over-all a great hotel to stay at for a first time stay at Ho Chi Minh.

Unique Quality: old 1930's charm, great pool and seating area before room in Old Wing

Great location

Would highly recommend this hotel for anyone staying in Ho Chi Minh City who likes to be able to escape the hustle and bustle of the street life. The rooms are well looked after, the pool was fantastic, the staff were very helpful and there is a massage option available within the hotel. The food was also very good.

Unique Quality: Pool area was a great place to spend the hot afternoons away from the noise and people.

Pool fantastic. Only thing we found was our daughters were on the 1st floor & foud it very noise from the street & hard to go to sleep, we were on the 2nd which we did not here a thing so go the go for 2nd & up plus stay in the old wing of the hotel. If we go back we would always stay at the GRAND HOTEL from Marilyn Perth Western Australia 17th August 2007

Grand in Saigon

We stayed at The Grand three times in Jan 2004. Maybe we are a little old fashioned, but we absolutely loved it. Great room, good service and the buffet breakfast is to die for.
Not particuarly cheap at USD 60 per night, but a bargain when you think of this class of hotel in some other cities in the world.

Unique Quality: Great location on Dong Khoi St. Hotel has a pool, restaurant and bar.

Great views of Saigon.

This beautiful Belle Epoque hotel, is located in the famous Dong Khoi street. It opened to the public in 1930, and now is completely restored. For great views ( and a original welcome cocktail) visit the Bellevue restaurant (12th floor)

Unique Quality: Modern comfort with history.

Revisit the 1930's

We stayed here twice on our visits to HCMC. First time we were in a standard room - nothing to rave about but the facitities were pleasant enough. On our second visit we stayed in one of the luxury suites. The rooms here all had french colonial doors opening onto a garden balcony which unfortunately you weren't able to walk out onto. The staff here were friendly enough but didn't seem to go out of their way. Breakfast is buffet style providing asian and western fare. The pool area was quite nice although due to the high rise buildings around the hotel - you had to chase the sun throughout the day.

Unique Quality: The french decor is really quite superb - like stepping back into the 1930's.

Grand Hotel Saigon

by David.B

Am planning a night at start of trip and at end (flight from Oz arrives and departs in HCMC) with a full day each stay to look around. I have had the Grand Hotel suggested as a good place to stay and am wondering if anyone has any comments on it or advice regarding rooms etc. Suggestions of other hotels in the same ilk are most welcome - even better, cheaper hotels that are as good (those little hidden secrets!).

Cheers and thanks, David & Sue

Stayed at the Grand last year and had a wonderful time. The hotel is located right in the middle of Dist 1 and close to restaurants, markets, shopping and sights. Stayed in both the standard rooms and the suites. The standard rooms were ok but really enjoyed the extra space and ambience of the deluxe rooms. The pool area is a little crowded - and due to the high rise buildings locted on each side you have to chase the sun around although to be honest didn't spend all that much time swimming - too much to do. The restaurant (downstairs) does a great breakfast and the staff are extremely friendly and organised.

Thanks Paul. Deluxe sounds a good option.

Any more thoughts out there? Optional Hotels?

Regards,

David & Sue

The Grand is good! The other hotel 2 blocks away and about the same price is the Majestic Hotel...across the street from the Saigon River. It also has a court side swimming pool. Never found it crouded like the Grand, though.

We stayed at the Rex in 2005 and the Continental last year which we enjoyed a lot more and it was cheaper (about $65 US ) ...I booked through Vietnamstay.com which I highly recommend.
