Travel from here to Thai Islands

by Pin77

Three of us are looking to travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Phuket ideally but would consider Phi Phi or Ko Samui. We're going to be travelling on the 26th December 2010.

Can anyone advise the cheapest, safest and also fastest way to do this??

Would also consider flying from elsewhere in Vietnam.

Cheapest AND safest way to go from from HCM City to Phuket is by air. I personally would fly by Air Asia www.airasia.com .
Good fares, but you will need two tickets: one from HCMC to Bangkok or to Kuala Lumpur, and a second one from Bangkok/KL to Phuket. Book online and well in advance to secure lower fare.
As for Ko Samui, this is of lesser interest to a budget traveller: flights are more expensive, hotels and the rest as well.
Overland travel is not impossible (I have done it from Bangkok to HCM via Phnom Penh), but it is time-consuming and can be somewhat risky.
Cheers,

Richard

That's brilliant thanks! We hadn't thought to do it that way and it's by far the cheapest and easiest option I've seen.

Thanks again for your help.

Travel Tips for Ho Chi Minh City

City Maps

by lmviterbo

Don’t bother to buy one for HCMC, unless you want a map including all the 17 urban and 5 suburban districts. SASCO (Southern Airports Services Company) provides free copies of their own 1:22,000 maps, and there aren’t any better ones out there. You can get a SASCO map at their booth in Tan Son Nhat International Airport, and it is also available in most hotels. Or you can just stick to the perfectly adequate maps included in the guidebooks.

ARCHIVED! Airport Tax collected separately

by xuessium

ARCHIVED! THIS TIP IS NO LONGER VALID!! AIRPORT TAX IS NOW INCLUDED INTO THE TICKET.

The airport tax is collected at the airport itself upon your departure from HCMC. There will be a counter right after you had cleared security and had gotten your passport stamped for departure to collect the US$12 airport tax.

Visiting Pagodas!

by machomikemd

Remove your shoes before entering Buddhist pagodas. Small donations placed in the boxes found in temples are appreciated. It is acceptable to keep your shoes on within Chinese pagodas.

Never let the soles of your feet face other people or any sacred monument, such as a statue of Buddha.

Cu Chi by speedboat with Saigon River Express

by ianfogg

Saigon River Express offers VIP speedboat tours to the Cu Chi Tunnels - the Mekong Delta - and jungle canal tours around Saigon. This is the service that was recommended as part of "Three Perfect Days: Saigon" in United Airlines inflight magazine and has been recommended in many other international publications. With a fleet of brand new speedboats and providing five star service - Saigon River express offers the most exciting way to see the best attractions around Ho Chi Minh City. Even a sunset tour around Saigon involves exploring narrow jungle canals with a village made of bamboo and thatch as well as visiting a spectacular floating Temple. This is definitely a must for any visitor to Saigon. http://www.saigonriverexpress.com

Tropical Fruit

by keeweechic

The Mekong Delta is the main producer of tropical fruit for the country and at one of the fruit orchards we stopped at there was a plentiful array of all kinds of fruit for us to sample. Just the thing on a hot day.

Location : Thoi Son (Phung Islands), Mekong Delta.
