The Nation's March Toward True Democracy
by Nemorino
My tenth visit to Saigon was also in June 1964, and the reason this time was to have a dental checkup.
On Sunday, June 20, I flew from Xuan Loc to Bien Hoa in an HU-1D helicopter, which was newer and larger than the HU-1Bs we had been using up to then. From Bien Hoa to Saigon I had to ride in the back of a truck along highway 1.
On Monday I went to the dentist, and I spent most of Tuesday and Wednesday at Tan Son Nhut airport trying to get on a flight to Xuan Loc, which I didn't succeed in doing until Thursday.
Though I hardly ever read the Saigon Daily News (an uninformative government-line paper with the motto "The Nation's March Toward True Democracy"), I did take a photo of the front page of the edition dated Wednesday, June 23, 1965, with the headlines:
Step towards ending of war
Foreign Minister spells out conditions of just and durable peace
V.C. must stop subversive and military activities -- Non interference -- Right of V.N. to maintain law, order and security -- Effective guarantees of independence of the Republic of Vietnam
Here's A Tip!
by Unknownsu
Although tipping is not customary in Vietnam, the server would really appreciate the generous offer of a little something extra in addition to the their next to nothing salaries. I always take into account on whether the server goes out of their way to see I am satisfied with my meal or whatever I may be doing at the time. Percentage depends entirely on the patron.
Relaxing....

Opportunities for massage abound, but almost exclusively they involve pretty young girls in short skirts make a living on "tips". I dare to say that it is almost impossible for a male not to be groped during a massage.
Perhaps the only prefessional massage centre free of debauchery is at the Saigon Prince Hotel where the treatments are superb!
Foot massage is popular in the city and there are plenty of little lounges to sooth weary feet. There's little between them and they seem ver y friendly and welcoming. Comfort Foot Massage opposite the Saigon Prince Hotel is a friendly place to put your feet up!
Great Buys in Saigon Square
by poochapoocha about Saigon Square Shops
Saigon Square is a more spacious alternative to Ben Thanh, fewer shops but shopping is cooler. Its pretty compact, so do a quick walk through, cos the shops at the entrances tend to be more pricy than those tucked in corners or in quieter lanes Good buys for Knock-Offs at Saigon Square- Kipling bags (big tote bag - S$13), North Star backpacks or pouches (S$8). Adidas/Puma/Nike - drifit sort of material (S$9) - watch out for zips on the shirts - some don't zip well, Kids clothing - American brands, like Children's Place, Gap, Sprockets - girl's skirts abt S$5, dresses abt S$8. Loads of girl's Tees, skirts, shorts, dresses. Limited Boys stuff
