A suitable place to start from
I stayed here in Nov, 2009. I paid $51 USD total for 3 nights ($17/night) includes breakfast plus free airport pickup with 3 night stay. Large room with A/C, CableTV, some English channels, WiFi in room (becoming common now even in lower budget Saigon hotels.. Excellent location to start with, BUT, it is the backpacker area & furnishings are a bit old. Still, clean and comfortable, very quiet rooms in back w/window, helpful friendly staff.
Unique Quality: Has a lift, always a plus in this area. A good deal w/the free airport pickup service. Other than that, rather typical for this price in the Pham Ngu Lao area but does include breakfast, many do not.

Strategic Hotel at District 1
The room is very good for USD 30 per night (up to 2 people); even I can find hair dryer here. The location is perfect, just right at the backpaking area.

A Nice Homely Hotel
The hotel is small and very homely... staff are extremely helpful... service and facilities are very good... nearby and within short walking distance are post office, banks and licensed money changers... good and cheap restaurants as well as numerous travel agents for inter-city coach tickets as well as cheap local and out-of-town tours... this is part of the backpackers area...
