Chinatown
by iwys
Cholon, Ho Chi Minh City's Chinatown, is one of the most interesting parts of the city to wander around. The area was almost abandoned in 1979, when Vietnam was on the verge of war with China. Large numbers of ethnic Chinese fled the country in fishing boats, and many of them died at sea. Meanwhile their houses in Cholon were looted.
Since 1991, when friendly relations were re-established between Vietnam and China, the Chinese community has returned and Cholon has come back to life again. Its markets and temples are now as active and busy as they ever were.
Cholon was once known as Pleasure City and featured in the the French film, "The Lover".

Tipping...
by Fondest_Memories
Tipping is usually not necessary in Vietnam. Especially, in the small cafe's that dots almost every street corners of Saigon(HCMC). If you decide to leave tips, I suggest that you hand it to the person that serviced you. I, myself, is use to the western custom of leaving my tips on the table. So, that's what did the first time I visited Vietnam. I tip this young girl, about 12 years of age, at a small cafe....hahaha...As I was leaving, she frantically chased after me, thinking that I have forgotten my money...So, from then on I always hand my tips to the person directly. Besides, leaving your tips on the table is not such a good idea in Vietnam anyway. Your tips might not even reach its rightful owner, the person you intented to tip.

The South is well fed by the cultivation of the Mekong Delta. The Mekong river, which originates from Tibetan plateau flowing 4,500 km to Vietnam and to the sea with 9 different branches (nine dragons).
