4 days waiting time in ho chi minh city

by Sibi3

Hi there

I'm flying to HCMC tomorrow and then have to wait for my friend to arrive. She'll be there about 4 days after me. As we both wanna see the tunnels, go to the mekong delta etc. there's no sense for me to do these things while waiting for her. So, are there any ideas about how I could spend my time until she arrives?
I was also thinking about going to Con Dao for two nights, but couldn't find any reasonable hotel over there...and I read that the beaches which are about two hours ride away from hcmc will be crowded for the weekend...

So, if anyone has a good idea - please let me know!!!

Thanks a lot,

Sibylle

Take the hydrofoil down to Vung Tau. It's a short trip and I'm sure you'll be able to find a hotel there. Just go - what do you have to loose?

Hi Sibylle,

I can only suggest you for sightseeing the city by walking to spend time in HCMC. Or you can do a city tour in public bus. Most of the bus in Saigon stop at the bus station in front of Benh Tanh Market. Buy a map at post office and it will help you to explore the city.
At night, in the park at Pham Ngu Lao street you can watch many young Vietnamese playing Da Cau. It is a local game that interesting to watch. It's like badminton but without racket. Instead, they use leg as a racket.
And in the park you can find many Vietnamese student who eager to learn English language, so you can speak to them and learn about Vietnam while waiting for your friend.
I hope this will help you.
:)

Or you could go to Phan Thiet which looks a really interesting place to go - not too far away - a bit further up the coast from Vung Tau.

Another thought - get the bus up to Dalat. It's a very pretty place that many people miss due to a busy itinery. Loads to do there.

....not wanting to dis. Vung Tau too much.....but there's not much there.

Oh yeah - I really liked Dalat - and there's plenty to do there.

Yes, it was one of our favourite spots, Cheryl.

Another thought is to fly down to Phu Quoc for a few days. The airfares are not too expensive.

Two years ago we took a flight to Da Lat in the highlands, one hour flight, stay 2 nights and then fly back. Flights were approx US$35 ONE WAY.Photos on my Da Lat page.
Good Luck

Actually, there's a lot of things to do in HCMC:

Visiting the markets - Ben Thanh and Binh Tay.
Visiting Pham Ngu Lao, the backpacker area.
Visiting the religious sites - Jade Emperor Pagoda, Cha Tam Church (very historical), Phuoc An Hoi Quan Pagoda, Quan Am Pagoda, Thien Hau Pagoda (beautiful, look at the figures on the roof), Tam Son Hoi Quan Pagoda, Nghia An Hoi Quan Pagoda, Cholon Mosque (quite peaceful), Tran Hung Dao Temple, Xa Loi Pagoda.
Visiting landmarks - People Committee Building (Hotel de Ville), Opera House and Post Office, Reunification Palace.
Visiting museums - Museum of Vietnamese History, War Remnants Museum.

Hope you find something in the above list that will interest you ;-)

Travel Tips for Ho Chi Minh City

Chinatown

by iwys

Cholon, Ho Chi Minh City's Chinatown, is one of the most interesting parts of the city to wander around. The area was almost abandoned in 1979, when Vietnam was on the verge of war with China. Large numbers of ethnic Chinese fled the country in fishing boats, and many of them died at sea. Meanwhile their houses in Cholon were looted.

Since 1991, when friendly relations were re-established between Vietnam and China, the Chinese community has returned and Cholon has come back to life again. Its markets and temples are now as active and busy as they ever were.

Cholon was once known as Pleasure City and featured in the the French film, "The Lover".

Tipping...

by Fondest_Memories

Tipping is usually not necessary in Vietnam. Especially, in the small cafe's that dots almost every street corners of Saigon(HCMC). If you decide to leave tips, I suggest that you hand it to the person that serviced you. I, myself, is use to the western custom of leaving my tips on the table. So, that's what did the first time I visited Vietnam. I tip this young girl, about 12 years of age, at a small cafe....hahaha...As I was leaving, she frantically chased after me, thinking that I have forgotten my money...So, from then on I always hand my tips to the person directly. Besides, leaving your tips on the table is not such a good idea in Vietnam anyway. Your tips might not even reach its rightful owner, the person you intented to tip.

The Mekong Delta

by keeweechic

Mekong Delta (Song Cuu Long, River of Nine Dragons) is the 'rice bowl' of the South. The urban sprawl ends abruptly and the Mekong begins. This is the most wealthy area of the country.

The South is well fed by the cultivation of the Mekong Delta. The Mekong river, which originates from Tibetan plateau flowing 4,500 km to Vietnam and to the sea with 9 different branches (nine dragons).
