This hotel is situated near to the former American Embassy. The lobby is a vast, light and airy area with helpful staff. Our room was very nice and had a superb view over the city (we were on the 15th floor) and had a huge bed and very nice bathroom.
The hotel has excellent facilities including a health spa and business centre. There is a pool on the roof but when we went up there it was too windy!
Nice Hotel for Pleasure & Business

The Sofitel Saigon Plaza was really a well maintain and clean hotel even the superior room. I was planning to upgrade to Executive Room if the Superior room turn out no good upon arrival. But I was very pleased with the Superior room given. If you prepaid 15 days in advance, you get a very good deal on the Sofitel website.
We had booked 2 rooms; one Superior King and the other Superior Twin. Both rooms are spacious even the toilet. We were given a corner King size bed room (Rm811) that comes with a sofa. The only complaint for that room is the window is very small and not much view.
It has a French Restuarant and a cafe with a deli cum gift shop on the ground floor. Buffet Breakfast is US$12 for Continental and Full international is US$16. Choice is quite good with Japanese, Korea, Vietnamese noodle, & western spread.
It does 1 way foreign currency exchange to dong based on bank rate without commision for hotel guest. Rates were better than airport which charge commission. US$100 and US$50 get slightly better rate than smaller US$.
I like the fact the hotel has free internet access if you have lap top with you in the room and around the hotel. Another plus is the free aerobic and yoga classes at the Clark Hatch gym for hotel guest.
It offer basic Massages such as normal oil and 3 types of Aroma oil. Not a proper spa but massage technique was good. It has a shower and changing room shared with the gym. Price range from US$15 per hr before 5 pm and US$18 for treatment end after 5pm for normal oil. Aroma oil massage per hr is US$25 after 5pm.
For tourist the 1 way free shuttle to Ben Thanh market or Russian market (very near Opera House) is very useful. They did not have a regular bus maybe due to off-peak season but called a taxi for us. It start a 9 am and end around 5pm from Hotel.
Hotel Location is very near the Notre Dame Cathedral and Diamond Plaza (about 10 mins walk). From the Cathedral you can easily walk to the gate entrance of Independence Palace in 10 mins. A taxi will cost around $12,000 to $17,000 dongs ( US $1 to US$2 round to nearest $) depending on the flag down rate. The flag down rate varies with size of taxi, biger taxi higher rate.
Staffs is very friendly and helpful. When calling for service, they were very prompt in delivering. Most of the staff we encounter speak English and were helpful in locating the temple we wanted to visit in Chinatown.
As member of the Sofitel Card you get late checkout up to 4pm if room available.
Handy value

We stayed in a standard room at the Sofitel Plaza for 4 nights in May. The hotel is quite handily located, with some attractions within easy walking distance and all others only a short and easily available taxi away. The best feature of the hotel is the rooftop pool located on the 18th floor, great for a break from the hustle and heat with excellent views of the city. The hotel offers real value as they happily accept the Accor Advantage Plus Membership card. The buffet breakfast was fantastic value with a huge variety of food and attentive service from the staff. We found the staff to be friendly and extremely helpful especially when it came to communicating with taxi drivers.
Nice Property Dragged Down by Service Problems

I stayed at this hotel shorlty after it opened in 1999. I have to say I am impressed by how clean and well-maintained the hotel has been kept. The rooms and public areas seem new. The gym is excellent and the pool area provides a great view of all of Saigon and is a perfect place to tan. The hotel is well located close to the center of Saigon. However, I was really disappointed by the level of attention and service from the front desk and concierge. First, I was surprised by the lack of fluency in English (or French, since it's a Sofitel.) I understand that they speak Vietnamese in Vietnam, but it's an international hotel and I assume most of the clientele does not speak Vietnamese. So don't expect the concierge to get much done. Second, the front desk attendants always seemed bothered when approached with a question and weren't even friendly at the very end while I paid my bill. I really only require three things when I travel: a friendly staff, a clean room and 24-hour room service. I'll try a different hotel next time I'm in Saigon.
Not nice to come back.

After staying so long at tis hotel and coming back after 4 weeks in Mekong Delta I did not feel welcomed at all. Staff at excecutive lounge ( Mrs Van) is not attentive and reacted unfriendly to all guest.
Only to say, terrible. I am thinking to take future guest to the next best hotel in the area. After one day i have to go to other hotel , Renessance riverside, feel like a stranger, but no choice
Could not fault Sofitel Plaza!

As a staff member of Accor i chose to stay here becasue its 5 stars and i got cheap rates but overall my experience was excellent as im extra critical becasue i am a hotel emplyee myself. The sofitel had excellent ervice rooms very comfy and beautiful pillows were the best ive ever felt and it was only a short taxi trip into the CBD. I would recommend this hotel to everyone it is fabulous.
A nighmare of a place!

I arrived here last night around 10:30 p.m. with a terrible headache after almost 30 hours of flight from Washington, DC through San Francisco and Hong Kong.
The personnel of this hotel seems determined not to let me have any rest. After 11:00 last night, after I barely managed to fall asleep, there was an insistent ringing of my doorbell, which I ignored. Five minutes later the phone rang. The front desk was informing me that there was an information packet left for me there. They were waking me up for THAT!!!
At 8:00 a.m. this morning again another repeated ringing of my doorbell. This time it was housekeeping telling me they needed "to check the umbrella." They entered the room and grabbed the umbrella from my closet. That was it. They woke me up for THAT!!!
The housekeeping personnel are yelling nonstop to one another in the hallways, very loudly.
There is a brown substance oozing from the bathroom fawcett. The room is just slightly bigger than the queen size bed.
Today (my day of rest, so I can recover from the trip), there is an almost constant industrial noise throughout the whole day: drilling and pounding.
There is no place to have a bite between 2:30 and 6:00 p.m.
Needless to say, I am happy to move to Sheraton tomorrow. I will be staying in this town for 2 months, but -- luckily -- NOT in Sofitel!

I know I guy who wrote about that in his squidoo site, http://www.squidoo.com/vietnam_travel_overview. With a little more research I found this one on zestbit http://www.zestbit.com/wyattbobo/view/Vietnam-Travel.aspx It talks a lot about Vietnam.

Sofitel, Renaissance Riverside & New World are going for about US170 at the mommemnt. You might want to check the new mini hotels in Thi Sach D1, can only remember the names of the Star and May hotels, they will be about half that.

As usual Jonny's on the money
Stayed in the Nortern last month- (Morosov's response) it is in that area
It realy did tick all the boxes
Would recomend it to all - just a little further to walk from the town hall and markets but still in the $2 taxi fares to the city sights.
we walked back from Museums and etc - unless we felt really lazy
Check out the online mag
http://asialifehcmc.com/index.php it has some good info too
have fun - you'll enjoy HCM
