general travel tips

by Tomtt88

Hi all

I have 5 nights booked in HCMC and wonder if you would enlighten me with some info.:

- Is there cashpoints/ ATM inside HCM airport? (like to have some local currency on me as I arrive in the country)

- Do hostel/hotels retain your passport during your stay with them? Or do they accept photocopies?

- Looking to stay at Thang Long Hotel. Anyone had experience with this hotel? (looking at US25 per night range, but any other decent hotel suggestions will be appreciated)

Many thanks!

Tom

Hi Tom, Yes there are ATM's located at HCMC Airport - both inside the arrival hall and on the outside concourse area. The hotels we stayed at retained our passports and in some cases our airline tickets. This wasn't really a hassle as the hotels reconfirmed our flights for us as well. Not too sure about Thang Long Hotel - didn't stay there. Enjoy HCMC - it's a wonderful place.

I stayed here the last time in HCMC, and will be staying again for my upcoming trip. It's in the same price range that you're looking at.

Wow! what quick responses!!! Thanks again for your help.

Indochine looks great, good location, and within my budget! :-) Think I'll be staying there instead.

All the nicer hotels in southern Vietnam (HCMC - 3 hotels, Dalat - 1 hotel, Nha Trang - 3 hotels...) only made a photocopy of my passport and return my passport immediately. However, when I joined Sinh Cafe to Mekong Delta and stayed at a $8/night hotel, they kept my passport which I wasn't very comfortable about it.

So, it is not a government requirement that they must keep your passport. A photocopy will do. I think the budget hotels just like to keep your passport as a guarantee for them. Also maybe they don't have a copier on site(?)
