Que Huong - Liberty 3 Hotel (187 De Tham St., District 1, HCMC) is a great hotel. The location is great too. I paid $20/ night.

How about Lavender hotel at 208-210 Le Thanh Ton Street D.1? It's a clean hotel with friendly staff and great service. The location is great. It close to Ben Thanh Market and almost everything else in District 1.

I stayed at Ma Maison just for the one night since I was between flights and Ma Maison is not far from Tan Son Nhat Airport. Yes, it's a little out of the way, but this is the type of place you will always remember, and not just another hotel. The owner/manager personally greeted me with a cold glass of passion fruit juice and loaned me her personal laptop to use. The pho and breakfast were simply outstanding, and the room itself was something out of House Beautiful. For $45. this is the bargain to top in Vietnam!

The high end guesthouses by Madame Cuc: all in district 1 in the backpacker district:

MC 127: 127 Cong Quynh St.
MC 184: 184 Cong Quynh St.
MC 64: 64 Bui Vien St.

If one of them is not available, they will call the other ones to check for you.

Travel Tips for Ho Chi Minh City

HCMC - Saigon - City Map

by dlytle

It is always useful to have a helpful map as a guide to a city that one is unfamiliar with. Here is a Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) map that shows the metropolitan area. It is marked out by districts and District 1 is where you will find most of the worthwhile tourist hotels and tourist spots. All of the motorbikes, bicycles and people driving them as they swarmed the streets of Saigon.

War is over

by SirRichard

When I came to Vietnam I was afraid to find a country with deep traumas about its recent wars and so. Well, I really didn't chat deeply about that with any local, but what I felt at the streets was that that period was over and now war was just a Museums topic, and sometimes a tourist attraction, like thos evisits to the CuChi Tunnels where the Vietcong used to hide.
After winning the War, this country seems to have won the Peace too. Good luck, Vietnam!

The Ho Chi Minh portrait

by SirRichard

Being a National Hero and father of the Nation, I was expecting to see portraits of HCM all over Vietnam, in every shop, corner and public building.
But surprisingly, the cult of the personality doesn't sem to go so far here, and I just saw a few portraits in some govermrnment buildings... oh, and in every bank note too!!

Claustrophobia madness

by perseushermes

The flash from my camera gives a wrong impression how it actually is.
It is pitch dark, stuffy, hot, scary, ... and all the fears rolled into one.
You would have difficulty breathing too.

The Cu Chi Tunnels.
You have to experience it as how the soldiers experience it every day throughout the war.

MAJOR TIP - bring a torch light and a change of clothes.
Water is important too! You'll need it

More Tips

Ben Thanh Market

by betska

Ben Thanh market has a little of everything. Clothes, manchester, souveniers, coffee, fruit & veg etc.
I found the fresh food section the most interesting. Eels & fish jumping out of their buckets, frogs still moving even though they had been skinned and decapitated. Not for the squeamish for sure. The fresh fruit on display was very colourful.
