Trips in Vietnam

Hi everyone, I'm arriving in Hanoi tomorrow and staying there for a couple of nights. What I really want to do is to take a trip that encompasses Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

Does anyone know if this is possible?

A couple of nights in total or just a couple in Hanoi then onward? If only a couple of nights in total your not going to be able to do much but see Hanoi

With a little research, planning and organization most things are possible.

Visa on arrival is available for Cambodia and Laos but (as far as I know) you will need a re-entry visa if you are leaving Vietnam and then returning for your flight home. Not sure about land crossings with Cambodia and Laos though.

I usually go over the top with finding out things well before I leave so in some ways I envy those that head off without much preparation.

If you have the time and/or money it is certainly possible to cover all 3 countries. For my tastes I'd look into getting from Hanoi across to Vientiane, Luang Prabang and then perhaps head down to Cambodia - Siem Reap and Phnom Penh then a boat trip down the Mekong to Saigon and back to Hanoi via Danang.

From a quick Google search there are numerous travel agents and assorted transport companies based in all 3 countries who will be able to help.

I'd quite like to hear about what you end up doing.

Well, if you are going to cover Vienam, Laos and Cambodia in a couple of days.
I suggest you don't. Stay in Hanoi and enjoy. Its so beautiful and nice in Hanoi. I really loved it there.

But if you have more days to spend it is defiantly possible. I crossed the Vietnam/Cambodia border with a boat-trip along the Mekong river from saigon.
it was amazing. The tour from Saigon to Phnom Pehn took 2 days (stayover at hotel in the Mekon Delta). Be aware when changing money (Cambodia/Laos money), the Laos money and the Cambodian money are very similar but the rates are very different, so be aware so you don't get Lao money when Cambodian money are expected. I was fooled that way. Lao money is also quite difficult to get rid of outside Laos (I got some Laos money for free from a traveler whom discovered that to late). Don't change more then you use in the country. However my mistake was affordable and no big problem for me.

It's easy to visit Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia but for a few days you can't do it. Many travel agents in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia offers tours through the three countries.

Hanoi Mid-autumn festival

Mid- Autumn Festival is for the children especially, that's why in Hang Ma street - the joss-paper street of Hanoi , is all in red colour. Traditional toys and modern toys are selling here from the 1st of August lunar month.
Vietnamese people have moon cake for this festival. So sweet I must say! But it's worth to try. :) Favourite toys of children that day are star - lanterns and masks.

The story of 1000 year-old city

People think Hanoi citadel is closed, actually, it doesnt. Not many things left after the war, now just 2 gates , one tower, a ground from a palace court with 2 stone dragons from 15th century.
But it's worth to go there to know , to listen to the calling of history.
Northern Gate ( Cua Bac ) : Hoang Dieu street. Open from 8 -11:00, 13:00 - 16:00

There are many shops that you can walk in and choose

Remember to check if you can understand the language. Most of the DVDs are from China.

Hanoi Railway Station

You can actually walk from Old Qtr to Railway Station. About 20 mins slow walk and enjoy the city and street view. The railway station caters to southern and northern routes. Left side of the Station serves the southern bound trains. Do remember to be at the Station before departure time as the Train leaves on the dot.

Hot Rock and fresh Seafood

A nice restaurant near the Horison Hotel. Vietnamese Food, classic way or with a modern twist, served with hot Rock stonbe plates to grill for example Seafood or meat on the hot stone. They also serve Pizza and Spaghetti....
also try their sister restaurant on the other side of the street , pumpkin cafe pure vietnames I do not remember the name, but it was something like sweet and sour shrimp, but with extra big ones, and a lot of fresh herbs, delicious!!!
