Shoe cleaning boys on the streets
by Rodan44
Throughout the streets of Hanoi's old city, poor young boys carry shoe cleaning and repair kits and look for tourists whose shoes could use some work. They are quite aggressive and can be down scrubbing your shoes with a dirty toothbrush before you even have a chance to say NO. You have to give these kids credit for working to make a living, but it's still quite sad to see because they really should be in school or playing with friends. But we happily gave them a tip for their effort.
See places - go hashing!
by DoubleX
The world wide Hash House Harriers - A club for drinkers, who have running problem - is very active in Hanoi. Depending on the season, some 40 to 100 walkers and runners gather together on Saturdays for an afternoon run. Locations are usually out of town in the mountains or paddy fields. This is one of the best ways to get a bit closer to ordinary Vietnamese way of life, if you are a tourist. In addition, you see places, which you would have never seen otherwise. In Autumn, 2002, Hashers used to go for running by bus from Spotted Cow pub, Hai Ba Trung 23 street, some 100 meters south from Hoan Kiem lake.
PS. Good fun after the run in 'the circle' and more to come in 'OnOn' in the dinner party.
Downloading digital images onto CD
by heywinks about Yen Dung Photolab
This is a small photolab in the backpacker`s area where you can develop your film, download your digital memory card onto CD, get passport/visa photos taken, get slides, etc.
My purpose to come here was to download a 256MB memory card onto CD. It took about 15mins & cost 40,000VND. The price is about average around Vietnam.
Sleeper Busses
by kenningst
I booked my open (sleeper) bus ticket with Sinh Cafe (the real one) in Hanoi for my whole trip since they are the most reputable company in Vietnam. Since then there is also Hanh Cafe which popularity has grown tramendously and is also the most stiff competitor of Sinh Cafe having built branches across Vietnam. They charge a marginally cheaper price than Sinh Cafe. Worth check out.
The only problem about the sleeper bus is that it has a very tight leg space. Anyone who is taller than 5'7" will have a problem. I am 6'1" and so my ride from Hanoi to Hue for 14 hours wasn't very pleasant but then later found out that I can actually book the seats on the top bunker at the back row (specifically seat number 38) and that gave me loads more leg room.
