Re: food and fish markets

Hi we stayed at Nam Hai 1 on Ma May. Caught a trishaw heading away from the lake up Hang Buom,i thing we continued along Hang Vai Lan Ong just before you hit Phung Hung on the Right hand side - there was a huge food market. Plus heading toward lake up Hang Be there was a side street food market to the right. lots of stalls of fresh food, vegies and seafood. Sorry it was 4 years ago and i didn't have a map until two days prior to leaving. Memory is a bit vaig. Hope it helps.

It would help if you told us your location. I suggest the central market off of Hang Be if you're in the Old Quarter, but if you're up in West Lake or down south below Hai Ba Trung, it could be a different matter?

Travel Tips for Hanoi

Tet

by Willettsworld

Tet is the most important and popular holiday and festival in Vietnam. It is the Vietnamese New Year marking the arrival of spring based on the Lunar calendar. It takes place from the first day of the first month of the Lunar calendar (around late January or early February) until at least the third day. Many Vietnamese prepare for Tet by cooking special holiday foods and cleaning the house. There are a lot of customs practiced during Tet, like visiting a person's house on the first day of the new year, ancestral worshipping, wishing New Year's greetings, giving lucky money to children and elderly people, and opening a shop.

I was lucky to be in Hanoi during Tet in 2009 and the markets and shops and streets were simply heaving with people buying goods. The main photo shows a guy with a kumquat tree on the back of his motorbike which is used as decoration in the living room during Tet. Its many fruits symbolise the fertility and fruitfulness that the family hopes for in the coming year. I've included a separate tip on the Tet celebrations plus added some video.

Halong Bay - Paradise, part II

by King_Golo

Halong Bay is not only a natural wonder, it's also a good place for sports. You can go trekking on Cat Ba Island, do some speleology in Sung Sot Cave, enjoy yourselves while kayaking in the warm sea, and much more. Many tour offices offer special sports tours to Halong Bay - check out the offers in Hanoi's old town.
