Thanks to Hien's recommendation, I came to stay in Hồng Ngọc 2 while in Hà Nội. The hotel is located in Phố Cổ or Old Quarter, a few minute walk from Hồ Gươm (Hồ Hoàn Kiếm) and Chợ Đồng Xuân. There are five Hồng Ngọc Hotels, ranging from one to three stars. Hồng Ngọc 2 is ranked two stars but we would not know it. The hotel is attractive, the decent size rooms are spotlessly clean, the furniture is beautiful, and the decoration is tasteful. Besides the two antique armchairs, the room comes with A/C, two safes, and a small refrigerator/mini bar. The bathroom is always shiny; the deep tub is good for either a shower or a soak. Although the hotel was full to maximum capacity and all 40 rooms have wood floor, it was quiet the entire time we were there, there was no noise to be heard, not noise from the guests, and not noise from the busy streets outside. The hot breakfast that is included in the room rate perfectly satisfied our stomachs each day with congee (rice soup), sauté vermicelli and/or noodles, steamed vegetables, eggs, pastries, fruits, yogurts, fruit juices, coffee, and tea. The all male staff is utmost courteous and capable, during our five- day stay, all of our needs were provided immediately and even the most time consuming request (searching for available seats on an earlier flight, changing the flight, going to the airline office to pay the fee and pick up the tickets) was realized without an hesitation. My sister and I paid VND 350,000 (US$22) for a double room and there is no doubt in our mind that the value we received exceeded the cost. In my next trip back to Hà Nội, Hồng Ngọc 2 will be the hotel I'll select again; there is no need to search for another accommodation. | | | | Old Darling Hotel | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I happened to sleep in this small hotel by chance. In fact, after a stressing arrival experience, I let myself go and followed the advice of my motorbike driver. He took me to this little hotel in a dark alley, in whivh I would have never stayed if I was going on my own... But it turned out to be a pretty convenient place, the stuff was helpful, the room (shower included) was clean, and I had a room with fan for 5 USD. It is just 5 minutes walking from the Lake. They have a tourist agency too, that will arrange you tours to Halong Bay, plane tickets... | | | | Ocean Tours: a night on Halong Bay is worth it | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Halong Bay is of Vietnam’s biggest attractions and is thus touristy but for most, a must see. The big problem with visiting the natural wonder is timing it for good weather. The summer is stormy and the winter tends to be foggy and full of drizzle. Evidently, the best time to go is in spring. We went in winter and it was a drizzly affair though we lucked out on the fog and could at least see the huge rock outcroppings jutting up from the South China Sea.
The easiest way to do this trip is sign up for a group outing in Hanoi. It may be possible to do it cheaper on your own but it seemed to be too big a hassle to even attempt it for the few dollars you might save. Besides, what made it fun was interacting with fellow travelers on the boat. You were bused down to the docks, a longer trip (3.5 hours) than you might expect and were given lunch once on the boat. The boat itself was a rustic relic out of the pirates of the Caribbean, but it served as home for our one night out on the ocean. The weather was not suitable for swimming but there were a few willing to brave the cold waters. We opted to stay dry and were glad we did when we found out there was no hot showers as advertised in the tour pamphlets! We also had dinner on the boat but all alcohol was not included. Unfortunately, beer and wine was one way for them to make some money on this trip and if I was to do it over again, I would bring a few bottles of wine with me. Luckily for us, an older German couple brought some rice wine and that not only helped the beer go further but also warmed us up quite a bit. The cabin was a bit cramped and ours had a small leak that became apparent the next day when it started to rain. No worries as it did not rain our only night on the boat. Phew! We had only signed up for the one night trip and said we would decide out on the sea if we wanted to stay another night. They said this was not possible but, of course, it became so once we got out to sea. If you want to spend money in Vietnam, no one is going to deny you this opportunity….lol. You got breakfast on the boat and once back at the docks, you got a lunch at a local restaurant before heading back to Hanoi. The cost for the whole package was $30 per person. It is pretty cheap I guess but the quality is not super great. Bring some beer or wine with you and enjoy the people you meet on the boat. If you get good weather, just enjoy, I’m sure it’s gorgeous. It was even pretty in dismal weather. | | | | Phan Thai Hotel / Camellia Hotel 4: Staying in the Old Quarters | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
WARNING: Do take this review with a pinch of salt as standards have been slacking here lately. Further checks with other travellers revealed that many have mistaken Camellia Hotel 2 for this hotel so do take note of it before you book your accomodations. If you're keen to see what life in the Old quarters is like, you'll need to stay in a hotel in close proximity with the buzz of activity. Thanks to another VTer's recommendation, guell, I found a nice hotel smack right in the centre of the quarters.Phan Thai Hotel was excellent choice. Service was good and they had every facility to make you feel comfortable. Best of all, ODC travel service was right at their doorstep! I booked my Perfume Pagoda and Halong Bay trip over there. TIP: Try to book a deluxe rm, it's on the upper floors, far away from the buzz of the traffic
Why I like this place: 1)Close to Ho An Kiem Lake 2)Cheap Laundry Servies 3)Deluxe Rm (US$26) had a balcony overlooking rooftops in the Old Quarters, attached bathroom with hot water, bathtub and toiletries. 4)Free Internet, Cable TV 5)ODC travel at front lobby 6)Money changing services Leave a Comment Theme: HotelPrice: US$20-40 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 44 Hang Giay, Ha Noi, Vietnam.Website: http://www.traveltovietnam.com/booking/lodging/detail.asp?LodgingID=250

 | | | | Baoson Hotel: Reasonable hotel in Hanoi | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Large rooms - one double bed and one single bed in each room. Bathrobes, bedroom slippers, in-room safe & mini-bar were provided in all rooms Lobby was okay, lifts were tiny and could barely fit 3 of us with our luggage. They turn off the lobby lights at midnight, so if you get back past midnight, be prepared for it to be dark. Check-in: They will ask for your passport and inevitably take a long while to key in all the details into their computer. Our group of 21 people took about 45 minutes.
Indoor swimming pool-opens till 9.00 pm so I missed out on swimming there because we had arrived too late. The complex which houses the indoor pool also comes with a sauna and massage facilities. Room guests may use the sauna for free. The breakfast room was rather small, and it was crowded during the peak time with different tour groups there at the same time and the breakfast was nothing fancy-however, the beef noodle soup "Pho" was quite tasty. There was also a chef there preparing fried eggs in any style - your choice. Location is quite good-only 6km from the Old Quarters. Taxi costs between Dong 30,000 (US$2) to Dong 50,000 (US$4) to town from the hotel. Air-conditioning didn't work in all rooms although the air con in my room was fine. Couldn't understand why they gave out only 1 key-card per room, although there were two to a room for our group. | | | | Royal Hotel: you no honest | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Since we were not entirely happy with our first accommodation in Hanoi, on returning from our overnight trip to Halong Bay, we decided to try out some other places. There was a tout standing outside the Royal Hotel and when we told him we had been paying $9 a night for a double, he offered us one for $7. We checked it out and it was a nice place and the location was even better than the first place we had stayed.
People generally think of Vietnam as a tropical and thus hot place but in winter, Hanoi is anything but hot. In fact, it can be quite chilly when the sun is not shinning. The rooms seem to universally lack heat and this place was no exception. So, it was not the warmest place to stay and only some thick blankets kept us from freezing. The staff here was slightly less pushy then our first hotel but inflated prices, even from one desk clerk to the next! We had some negative feelings towards them but everything worked out in the end and I imagine, it would be hard to get a fair shake in Hanoi on everything unless you were constantly on your guard. In general, it was a nice and safe place to stay at a very good price but be careful what you pay for other services like train ticket booking. Otherwise, you might get accused of being "no honest." ;) Leave a Comment Theme: HotelPrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: 73 Ma MayPhone: 84.4.8244425Directions: In the heart of the Old Quarter, close to all the backpacker cafes.Other Contact: royalhotel1@hotmail.com
