Hanoi to Kunming (Yunnan, China) - best method??

by bondonnell

Hello All,

Immeasurable thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

I am currently in Siem Reap and will be flying into Hanoi tomorrow night, where I'll be for 5 nights (inclusive of some sort of Halong Bay trip - prob 3 day/2 night deal). I then plan to move on to south-western China, Kunming specifically. I post soliciting advice for this leg of my journey, as the sources I've consultated to date seem a bit, well, dated.

Seat61.com mentions that, as of May 2002, the direct train from Hanoi to Kunming has been suspended due to flooding on the Chinese portion of the line, but that repairs were/are slated for 'the near future'. Has anyone traveled overland between Hanoi and Kunming recently (or not recently)? The method suggested on Seat61 is overnight train to Lao Cai, taxi across border to Hekou, then overnight bus to Kunming. I'd prefer not to burn two days in transit, if at all possible. Along these lines, anyone know of cheap flights between Hanoi and Kunming; Vayama and a few other flight search engines pull up minimum fares of US$340!!! which is a bit too steep for my budget.

Any help will be cherished!

Cheers,
Shawn

Lao Airlines flies to Kunming from Viengcheng.. they also fly to Hanoi.. but i am not sure about the fares. since you would be in Hanoi, you could check with them directly or some travel agent might have a good deal for you. I remember the flight to Hanoi from Siem Reap (direct) was not cheap either..

HI
airlines is better. I don't think the price so exspensive! As i know, flight from Hanoi to Kunming is just 180$ + Tax (~80$) for Oneway ticket. but you must present chinese visa. i have booked at APT Travel no9 Hang Vai str Hanoi.
Wish you all the best!

Travel Tips for Hanoi

The Bicycle Is Still a Transport Option, for Now

by AKtravelers

If Hanoi is like the other rising Asian cities of Taipei and Beijing, the bicycle as a transportation mode is fading fast. While I saw plenty of bicycles in the steets, the predominant conveyance was the motor scooter, and the older people sticking with their bicycles clearly seemed out of place -- literally being passed by the new era.

Ba Kieu Temple

by KhanhLy

When we were there in November 2004, the temple had the Hanoi Fine Arts University Painting Exhibition. They have beautiful paintings there. You can buy some small oil paintings for about $4-$6 USD a piece. They also sell hand painted cards, some were 8 cards including envelopes for $1. These will make nice framed arts.

Yummy fish

by n1te about Cha Ca La Vong

Only sells the one dish. Restaurant is a little warm, probably due to the dish "cooking" on the table. Fish comes with fish sauce, peanuts, chilli and a vege. Can opt to cook all the vege together with the fish but that would make it a little too oily later on.

Fish eaten with noodles served, vege, peanuts & fish sauce.
Paid VND 90K per person, excluding drinks upon shown the price on a piece of paper before having our meal. Has the impression that tourist are charged more than locals.
