Very Nice Hotel ...but a bit far out form things!

Well it is entirely possible the Fortuna has changed from when we stayed there in 2007. It is a Japanese run hotel in Hanoi in the embassy section. We stayed 3 weeks there and were treated wonderfully the entire time. The hotel is very nice but quite full of business travelers from all over the world. Nice room, decent breakfast downstairs with a variety of western and asian foods. Spa upstairs,,, warning,,, found out the hard way they offer more than just a massage. I do have to say however for the massage part I was bent and twisted in ways I never imagined and felt relaxed afterwards. Wife also went,,,, did not like the experience,,, you can guess why. Apart from that great place to stay. Several good restaurants nearby... Will list more about them in a later post.

Unique Quality: friendly staff, if you are there for embassy visits convenient for that. Nice rooms and quiet in the evenings as the area dies off in the evening. Runs about the same price as other higher end hotels in Hanoi. We had a triple room for 120$US a night, included breakfast.

Hi
Fortuna and Sunway hotels are 4stars hotel, have very good service.
Fortuna is not in the centre but not far(4km) and very convenient to go to centre.
Sunway hotel is near the centre(about1km). They have price from 75USD to 175USD/per room, depend the room type.
Free and easy sightseeing: you can go a round Hoan Kiem Lake, visit Ngoc Son temple(entrance fee), go to the West Lake, visit Tran Quoc Pagoda, walking in the old quarter.
And Halong, I think you'd choose Sai Gon Halong hotel or Halong plaza hotel, they are 4stars hotel.

I would go for the Sunway (Fortuna is mainly full of chinese, mainly interested in the "staff" in the nightclub). I would choose the Sunway, or better chioce in my books is the Zephyr right in the centre of town (details on my Hanoi tips).
If you go to Halong I would book a tour on which you sleep on the boat, there's not much to see in Ha Long City.

If really get into " staff " as you mean, Royal would be best in Halong ( Ouch ! ) , Same point, Fortuna in Hanoi as Jonny's advice .
I would give a go to Majestic Salute or Melia if I coulnt get the Zephyr.
Classically, City tour ( Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Ethnology Museum, West Lake, Temple of Literature ) is what you need.
