Dear friends...

I need your help, pls kindly advise.
This is my first time to go to Hanoi, I'll be in Hanoi on Feb.20.
I'll be spend 1 day in hanoi & 2 days in halong bay, after that moving to hochimin & spend 2 days there, and also i have plan to go to siamreap.

1. if i want to go from hanoi to hochimin by train, how long it will take?
how about the price? which one is better : train or airplane? is it only vietnam air that operate in there?
2. from hochimin to siampreap, i'll prefer go by airplane. Is it any airplane beside vietnam air that operate directly?
3. my second option is hanoi-luangprabang-siampreap, i prefer by airplane, is it only vietnam & lao air that operate to that route?
4. kindly advise backpack guesthouse/hostel around hanoi,halongbay,hochimin & siamreap.....

sorry for asking too much guys....^_^

looking forwards for your advise.

Can only offer my two cents re the trip between Hanoi and HCMC. I would definitely fly. It does not seem as if you have too much time available, and travel by air is both easy and very reasonably priced. Aside from Vietnam Airlines you can also try Jetstar Pacific at http://www.jetstar.com/vn/en/index.html

I recommend the Bich Duyen for accommodation in HCMC and the Dragon Hotel in Hanoi (although the last one is a bit more expensive and situated on the West Lake).

I also suggest the Sunshine Hotel group in Hanoi (about 8 hotels). I'll be in Hanoi about March 8th myself and will return to their Gia Thinh Hotel @ $30. - very nice/best location. I also suggest the Bich Duyen for Saigon - excellent for the money/very good location. Don't fail to see both Sapa and Hoi An - small towns that treat tourists very well. Also, contact these 2 groups for their free tours:

Travel Tips for Hanoi

ATM'S IN HANOI

by balhannah

People often want to know how much money you can withdraw from the ATM's.

A lot are only 1million dong..........
the INCOMB bank is 2million dong ............
ANZ BANK NEAR HOAN KIEM LAKE IS 9,900,000dong and there are security guards next to the ATM.
Quite safe! Located near the Old Quarter side of Hoan Kiem Lake

People watching

by Applelyn

I like to pop into a cafe or walk along the streets to observe the locals. In Hanoi, you can see people buzzing through in motorbikes and scooters manuvoering their way to dodge obstacles(Humans). It is amazing to see how versatile they are in their skills. You can also feel the team spirit as hawkers gathered around to eat at the same table on the streets. This sight in Hanoi made me feel that sometimes in some places, it is better without rules. It will bring out the flexibility of humankind.

Pottery, silk garments, laquer ware,

by tina_vietnam about on Pho Nha Tho Street

There are some nicer but more expensive shops on Pho Nha Tho Street.
They offer very good quality and more Western oriented kind of Hoem Furnishing and Clothes.

Also check out the Moca Cafe and visit the beautiful French cathedral. Not far from Haon Kiem Lake. Laquer ware, Bamboo, Silk, hand bags, shoes, skirts, evening dresses, Chop sticks,...... more than average!

Airport Taxis still $10

by oerkenbo

Taxis between Noi Bai airport and Hanoi should still be $10. There are rows of taxis waiting ouside the airport. As soon as you exit, someone will take you to one. Make sure you confirm it's $10. Also, my taxi driver tried to get me to agree to $12 after I got in despite the agreement with the dispatcher. Insist on the $10 rate. Don't spoil things for others.

On the way back to the airport, there's a big taxi stand on Quang Trung not far from Lake Hoan Kiem (opposite Vietnam Airlines office) that has a sign for a $10 trip to the airport. You can make an arrangement here for them to pick you up at your hotel. They'll try to get you to agree to a higher price. Just point to the sign and insist on $10.

There're places in the old town that advertised $7 to the airport too.

90,000VND per person

by sightseeing about Cha Ca La Vong

ok..let's face it..

this restaurant is getting more and more attention by tourists..

and if u've done the research, they sell only one dish - Cha Ca...

priced at 90,000 VND per person, we gave it a missed, and turned to Golden Land restaurant opposite to it..

Cha Ca La Vong-serve only one dish, no aircond, cook it yourself, expensive.
(2 person can't order for one)

Golden Land - varieties of menu, aircond, nice ambience, waitress cook it infront of you, at only 75,000 VND per person. (we order Cha Ca for 1 person, and side dish spring roll, turn out to be a full and satisfied meal )
