Basic and clean hotel in Hanoi

    by

This small hotel is located near to Hoan Kiem Lake which makes it close to many places of interest. It is also off the main street, which makes it a little bit quieter at night. Staff are friendly and rooms are very clean. We had a good shower with lots of hot water and the beds were very comfortable. Breakfast was included and was fine, although the menu was limited. There is free internet access in the hotel reception area too. The hotel organised our pick up from the airport for a very reasonable fee and the cost was added to our bill which was handy. Would recommend this service and would stay there again, no problem.

Unique Quality: Nice beds, good shower (always important to me!), friendly staff.

Directions: 5 mins from Hoan Kiem Lake. See photo link for directions.

Good View, Great Service in Excellent Location

    by

I would say for the price, this is the best you could find with an elevator and breakfast overlooking the Hoan Kiem Lake.... and having Mrs Moon as your host.

Unique Quality: If you are going to stay in this hotel ask for room 603 with a great view of Hoan Kiem Lake plus a huge bathroom. All rooms comes with complimentary breakfast on the 7th floor over looking the lake plus a wide range of breakfast to choose from, Pho Bo / Ga, Pancake, Eggs, Hams and so on. Free internet access in every room.

Directions: Located on the north west of Hoan Kiem Lake. Hang Hanh street is located behind Kim Quy Restaurant on the north tip of Hoan Kiem Lake

A Real Gem In Hanoi

by TripAdvisor Member TSC_7

Hi. My self and a group of 5 other friends just got home from a 4days holiday in Hanoi (Aug 28 - 31, 2007). Stayed at Golden Sun Hotel for 3 nights. Despite the really bad experience posted by some travellers, I am here to share with those who has doubts about Golden Sun Hotel.....THIS IS A GREAT HOTEL....1st class service at incredibly reasonable price.

Prior to our trip, I emailed Mrs Moon about my concerns on some of the reviews that I read about Golden Sun. Since it was our maiden trip to Hanoi and being an all girls group, we do not want to be caught in a situation where we ended up with no rooms or forced to stay in a lesser hotel.

Mrs Moon was apologetic about the bad reviews due to her giving birth but personally ensured that our group will be given what is promised.

True enough, everything was in perfect order upon our arrival. In fact I must say, the quality of the rooms & the breakfast provided was way better than expected. Two thumbs up!!

Even the excursion trips that we booked via Mrs Moon were as what we were told to expect, if not better. We took the day trip to Halong Bay on Day 2 & travelled to Hoalu-TamCoc on Day 3. Halong Bay was so-so but the bicycle ride from Hoalu to TamCoc was great fun. And so was the 2 hours sampan ride at Hoalu...strongly recommended!

Our impression of Hanoi? The outskirt area has lots of scenic beauty to offer and the food is DELICIOUS (strongly recommend Bobby Chinn's Restaurant & Little Hanoi in the city). BUT the traffic is horrendous and worse still is the noise pollution.

Our group concluded that 2 things made this trip memorable & worth the while....our stay at Golden Sun Hotel & the great food! Thanks Mrs Moon!

Overbooked

I was left with mixed feelings about the Golden Sun Hotel, I booked the hotel well ahead of time for our family of 4 and also arranged our train and tour bookings ahead of time with them. We were picked up at the airport and arrived to great fanfare especially the children who adored Mrs Moon and the breakfast staff.

We really liked our family room on the first night and were told that we would have to leave the very next day to start our Halong Bay tour instead of the one after as planned and organised. We were informed that when we arrived back we would be given the best room on the 5th floor as a sweetener. They advised that the tour company had contacted them and notified them a typhoon was coming and we would need to leave earlier. Since we live in a cyclone prone area we thought this really weird but went along with it anyway. When we took the tour as planned the guide laughed at us and told us the islands are quite protected and there were no typhoon forecasts.

On arrival back from our tour at about 8.30pm and dragging two kids along we were told that we would have to settle for a twin room with one fold out bed on the floor as there were no other rooms in the hotel and none in the street for that matter and that also there would be no rooms at all at the Golden Sun for the following day and we would be moved to the hotel next door. We were too tired and cranky to care by this stage.

The next day we were moved to the Heart Hotel next door to a room which faced the road and had no extra glazing to stop the noise from the construction site next door. They poored concrete and revved motors until 1.00am and none of us could sleep.

After all these calamities with a booking we had confirmed ages in advance we realised that we were sent to Halong Bay early because of overbooking as well. So in effect the family room that we had booked at the Golden Sun for 3 nights only eventuated for 1 night.

The hotel rooms are lovely, it is in a great area and the staff are really sweet but travelling with a family and faced with all these overbookings and tall tales was a bit hard to bear.

Great little hotel

This hotel has a fantastic view of the Lake from the breakfast room. It did feel like coming home at the end of the day. Felt safe leaving the kids in the lobby to play on the computers. Great position. For the price i would highly reccomend it..

We booked for this hotel nearly 2 months in advanced but upon arrival, we were told that our reservation has been cancelled and were recommended to another hotel across the street. We were definitely not happy although the staff at the new hotel were lovely.

OK Hotel, great view

by TripAdvisor Member nguoi_du_lich

This is a very ordinary hotel in Hanoi's tourist district. It has all the amenities that budget travellers should need and is clean. However, it lacks charm. It is like any other hotel that is geared toward backpackers. You can see this in the furniture and decorations within the rooms, as well as all of the tours that are being advertised at the front door. I found that my room was crowded with two twin-sized beds. Again, if you're on a budget and want to fit a few people to a room,. this is not a bad hotel for you.

However, there are better places to stay, but for something nicer you will pay from 10-20 dollars more per night. I will say that there'st one of the best views of Hoan Kiem lake from the top floor that I've ever seen, so it scores some additional points for that.

Staff working there were adequate, breakfast was poor, but the same goes for most small hotels offering free breakfast.

Wonderful experience with the owner

by TripAdvisor Member kicking_asphalt

The hotel is a no frills hotel but service is great. Location is also great, we did not recognize this until we were exposed to the Dong Xuan market traffic and crowd. We could see that this hotel is nearer (or marginally within) the Church (shopping) Quarters, a little more upmarket than your standard fare but still affordable. Behind the hotel, Hang Hanh St is peppered with restaurants and by evening you could see it's where the locals and some occasional expats come out to play and be seen.

Owner Mrs Moon is delightful. She arranged all our airport pickup, trip arrangements to Sapa and Halong Bay, also our air tickets at list price. We were thrilled to have paid least in our whole boat for the Halong Bay trip. We gained several good travel tips from her to prepare us for the long time we have in Vietnam. She is also a very quick witted woman...when one of the guests overstayed at the room which was supposed to be ours, she quickly re-routed us to a nearby property (also owned by her family) and gave us a refund for inconvenience. She went to the extent of coming to look for us to apologize personally and getting feedback, all that when she's due to have a baby in days. If you book any of the properties she manages, you'll love her, I promise.

Not too Good

by TripAdvisor Member pacific06

Our group had 6 rooms. Air condition units in all rooms didn't make the room "AC cold". In one room, the air condition unit was defective. Moon was quick to take action but it still didn't make it AC cold. All rooms were simply cool due to electric fans. Comfort rooms and rooms were clean but the rooms are really small. Location was relatively good but will not recommend the hotel to friends and relatives.

Due to good reviews on Moon, herself, I booked our Halong Bay 1-day tour and City Tour through her. Unfortunately, MOON'S GOOD PERSONALITY DIDN'T MATCH THE TOURS ARRANGED FOR US. City Tour, I requested was private tour. But 4 other tourists joined us. When asked after our tour, Moon said the tour agency made a mistake. Moon and her staffs should have made sure that tours reserved are correctly given. I asked for partial refund due to tour not being private, Moon positively took action and we had our refund.

Halong Bay Tour was very bad. The boat didn't have comfortable seats. Boatman was topless. His wife and young children occupied one area. His children slept on the benches. Boatman's friend/relative had her merchandises displayed at 2 tables till the end of the tour. That again deprived our group from using the tables. Boatman's family and the vendor took away our much desired private tour and space.

MOON'S GOOD PERSONALITY AND QUICK APOLOGY FOR INCONVENIENCES DON'T GUARANTEE GOOD ACCOMMODATION AND TOURS.

Mrs moon. Your the Best.

The Golden Sun was the best Hotel that we stayed in when we were in VN. We only stay one night, but the service was great. We only booked one night ,but decised to stay in Hanoi for 4 days. Mrs moon let us use her facilities while she booked us into other hotels within the street. We felt so safe with her that we left our belongings there while we went to Sapa and our passport and money in her safe while we stay at the morning star and the win hotels. Mrs moon made us feel as family. she takes her business very seriously and tries to accomidate for everyone. High demand to get into this hotel. You have to book early. When you go, you can see why. If you stay. Say hi from Damian and Roberto from Oz.

Where to stay in Hanoi

by Dainell

When we travel, there will be 2 adults and two teenagers. I am looking for recommendations on where to stay in Hanoi. I would like to keep the cost down, but stay somewhere that is clean and airconditioned. (Will we need airconditioning in April in Hanoi?) Any recommendations?

Re: Where to stay in Hanoi

To most vietnamese people or those from tropical countries, it is quite cool and sometimes chilly in April in Hanoi. But if you're from europe, north america, and new zealand and australia, you will appreciate the A/C during April&May in Hanoi (but probably not in further north of Hanoi such as Sapa!).
from my own experience I would say staying at a guest house will be o.k if your priority is to keep the cost down. my stay at real darling cafe guesthouse at 33 Hang Quat St. was not bad at all. I had a quite spacious room with two beds, a wide balcony, A/C, shower/toilette inside at $10 (but it was 3 years ago around early October, the price may be a few bucks more now). The room was clean which means no bugs, no odor. but of course for the price the chairs, tables and all other equipments weren't decent.

Last year (Feb) my wife and I stayed at Hanoi Guesthouse on Bat Su street in the Old Quarter and we enjoyed it and highly recommend it. $15 USD per night for the room with private bathroom inside the room, ac, tv and breakfast included. We booked our Ha Long Bay tour with them as well which was a wonderful experience. We booked the room through hostelworld.com but here is their actual website:

Most of budget hotels in Hanoi have air-conditioner so please do not worry. Some nice hotels that I know are Golden Sun Hotel, Kim Hoang Gia Hotel, Elegance Hotel group, Hanoi Capital hotel...
More luxury hotels are Movenpick hotel, Inter-continental hotel, Hilton Opera hotel...
I often use the following website to book hotels for my travel, it can sort only air-conditioning hotels for you. www.vietnamhotels.org.vn

Hope this helps!
