I was there in late Feb a few years back and I was fine in a pair of jeans. I didn't bring a jacket with me on the trip. It was chilly in Sapa but that is further north in the mountains. I don't remember Hanoi being that cold. It was, of course, cooler than HCMC and the Mekong but it wasn't bad. Perhaps you'd need a light jacket at night.

You can always count on ricky giving you the weather forecast for any given city on any given month!
Agree with Etoile, I was there in late Feb.2009 and it wasn't cold at all. If anything it was starting to get humid/muggy. It would drizzle in the mornings and sometimes at night but other than that, Hanoi was wonderful.

Depends on where you come from! To a Vietnamese/Thai, winter in Hanoi/Sapa is considered cold. To a N. European/American, these destinations would be considered mild to cool. I always carry a nylon shell w/hood and that's all I've ever needed.
