Great boutique hotel
We were lucky to score a Junior suite for $75US due to an opening special. It was a good size and fantastic. We had a computer in the room, fresh fruit and a bottle of wine. And a balcony with city views. The staff were exceptional and it was located down a laneway away from street noise.
Unique Quality: Was a great place to come back to after a long day of trekking. Stretch out on the bed or the chaise lounge. Or move out onto the balcony.

Friendliest Hotel in Hanoi
After reading consistent reviews on forums about this hotel I decided to book for our family of 5. We were not disappointed. The Hanoi Elegance Hotel is in the middle of the old quarter and walking distance to all the major attractions. I booked directly with the hotel who wanted no up front payment and they also organised a pick up from the airport (US$17). How lovely to have someone waiting for us unlike our debacle in Bangkok! The lobby of the hotel belies it's crisp, clean rooms decorated in oriental style. Efficient air con, complimentary tea, coffee and fruit, room safe, toiletries, firm and comfortable beds and the convenience of FREE in room computer and Internet all add to the charms of this boutique hotel. But above all else the staff are what makes the Hanoi Elegance special. They go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and they were great with the kids, too (aged 7, 15 and 18). Complimentary breakfast was simple and delicious and better than the expensive one we had at a cafe on the shores of of Hoan Kiem Lake. Balcony rooms can be noisy - go for interior rooms.
Unique Quality: Warm and welcoming staff
Fantastic location
Small boutique hotel
Note: no elevator, so stay on lower levels if stairs a problem.

Old quarter
I enjoy my stay here. The staff welcome us like if we were his family. Vietnam people are friendly.
The place are clean, airconditioned, and have a bath tub toliet .
The breakfast is still ok, of cos not the buffet type.
the hotel are provided service to tours to tam coc and halong bay and etc.....
Unique Quality: Around the hotel are shops, where you do your shopping.
10mins walk from the famous hoan kiem lake where people do their morning exercise, and couples dating in the night.
But this hotel is located at the old quarter, so expect a bit noisy due the horn of the motorbike.
Don't know why, the vietnam bikers like to horn every now and then.

Great small scale boutique Hotel
Located in the heart of The Old Quarter, Hanoi Elegance operates 2 boutique motels. From USD30 per room to about USD60, each room is equiped with good hardwood floor, twin or double beds, bathroom, coffee/tea making facilities, a small complimentary fruit basket, yadi yadi yada.
A special feature will be the computer in each room, with internet access.
Another special feature is their friendly and helpful staff that makes your stay a little bit more special. i checked in with my wife on her birthday and they enthusiathically wished her and later sent up to the room a huge bouquet of flowers and a complimentary wine (of Vietnam Dalat region red variety).
Their breakfast is complimentary (actually billed in already) and serve some not so high quality stuff like bread with egg, ham or bacon served with either some fruit juices or coffee/tea..... or if you take their "pho" a noodle in either chicken or beef broth, they'll serve it to you in a hotel bowl, after they buy it from the street corner stall..... nice.
Their travel desk was also quite helpful in booking me a trip to Ha Long Bay. they have quite a few options including really expensive ones. I went on an average trip for a 1 night on the "Santa Maria Cruiser" boat trip to Ha Long Bay.
I stayed for a total of 4 nights here in a series of 2. On the first night, they didn't have the room of my choice, so they put me up in their smallest (but cheapest) room. It turned uot REALLY small, not for clautrphobic people. Of course on first days, one usually roam the old Quaters..... and spend less time in the room.
Also, say hi to Mr Do Van Dan, the Hotel manager, young respectable guy who feels real proud of his establishment and will be extra happy if you know his name and greet him by "Mr Do" (pronounced DOH)
Unique Quality: Friendly and helpful staff (well they do try very hard to be helpful) and they do not hang around for tips, but any is appreciated.
