On the web, the price for 2d/3n packages to Sapa is around US100. What is the price of a similar package if I were to book in Hanoi instead of obver the web? Similarly, what is the estimated price for the 3d/2n Halong Bay trip?
100$ for a 2d/3n package to Sapa seems a decent price but you should make sure that it does include the return train tickets and what kind of accommodation you're offered. Lower or higher prices? It much depends on when you're traveling: if in low season (normally during the local summer months), you can save heaps of dollars booking on arrival but that doesn't help in the high season.
There are hundreds of junk boats that cruise Halong bay and the prices vary drastically from 40$ to 300$ pp but many of them are much less desirable. I would personally advise you to search and read more before decision.
Hope this helps
You can book everything you need in Hanoi. No need to worry about pre-booking.
It gives you flexibility on timing (what if you want to stay an extra day etc). You also can bargain the price down once you are there. Can't remember what price we paid unfortunately!
Even when you book online, you still can make bargain with the tour operators. They're helpful to give you reliable information.
If you book directly with them, they can give better price because, they don't have to deduct a discount for the travel agents.
The sinh tourist has the 3 days/ 4 nights tours for only $90.22 and the 2 days/ 3 nights is only $79. Check them out at this link. I have took a few tours with them, no complain.

Try out Tai Chi at Hoan Kiem Lake at around 5:00 AM. It'S an experience! If you are not awake at that time join the gym at the Hanoi Sofitel. They also offer Tai Chi at around 7:30 AM. wide shirts and trousers, no shoes

So much of local specialities in the night market that you really need a bigger belly to stomach them.....
Cheap and tasty is how i describe the snacks and small eats in the night market. Don't worry, non of us had any stomach upset after consuming them.
Deal the price before you get on cyclo and make sure you have exact change because they always say they dont have a change for you. Keep your eyes open all the itme --- you sit in front of the driver !!!
