days to spend in hanoi?

by merygunawan

Hi VT,

please help...

My friend & I plan are planning to be in Hanoi (for 5 days) in mid May. We have visited HCM last year.
Questions:
- we searched for as much info as possible on VT, however, seems that there are many interesting spots are located outside Hanoi...
- any advice on must-see-places in Hanoi and near-by Hanoi?

thanks a lot for any info you can provide!

I would recommend Tam Coc which is a couple hour drive outstide of Hanoi, its described as the Halong Bay on land , we did a two day tour of the area and really liked it. Obviously there is Halong Bay which is great and not to be missed but I really like Tam Coc. In Hanoi I would recommend getting up early walking around Hoan Kiem Lake to see the locals doing their exercise for the day, it was such a nice way to start the day no traffic and for second you get to see the locals relaxing.

If you're into culture, then I'd highly recommend the Ethnology Museum. I prefer Halong to Tam Coc/Hoa Lu. Also if you've got extra time, then the northwest areas of Sapa/Bac Ha.

My family stayed 7days in Hanoi. We went to some famous places, they are very beautiful, specially Halong bay. When we arrived hotel, they said "if you have been Vietnam, but you haven't been Halong bay, that mean you haven't been Vietnam". I think that right, Halong very beautiful. You can spend 2 days at Halong bay, 1day for Hanoi city tour, 1day for Hoa Lu Tam Coc, and 1day for Perfume pagoda or traditional village (Bat trang pottery or Van Phuc silk village).
How about your hotel in there? you should book hotel before you arrival Hanoi. I want to recommend for you Hanoicapital Hotel. That hotel is good, they are very professional, their tours are cheap and wonderful.

Travel Tips for Hanoi

Not a surprise the imperialists have been expelled

by kokoryko

The inhabitants of Hanoi have an incredible sense of discipline! Do you see the difference on pictures 1 and 2? One has been taken before December 14th 2007 and the second one after December 14th 2007! Yes! From one day to the other the motor bikers changed from driving without helmet to drive with helmet; the law making helmets compulsory was applicable from that date and it was a surprise to see suddenly all these helmets on the streets, as there were very few, one day before; may be government and police are very strict, whatever, all these people followed the rule, and it may have a link with long historical sense of discipline. . . .
The two next pictures are also from before and after 14th of december and the last picture is from December 13th evening. . . . some shops were very busy!

Perfume Pagoda

by Applelyn

I enjoyed the ride on the sampan best. The soft rhythmic strokes of the paddle complemented the serene surroundings. Soon you will find yourself belending in with nature. Along the river, you can spot villagers living in caves, fishermen picking up bamboo containers to check their catch, hawks hovering around waiting for a chance to hunt and duckies swimming around. But try to wear long sleeve cotton blouse as the sun be sorching hot if it is at noon and wear good trekking shoes. At the foot of the mountain, you can choose to take a cable car or climb up. It takes about 30-45mins to climb up and 5mins but 150000VND to take a cable car. When I was there, the locals were celebrating a festival and the area were packed with hawkers and monks. It was an interesting sight. It is difficult to go there by yourself as the whole trip from Hanoi to Perfume Pagoda already took about 4 hours with chartered transport. Use ODC travel it is about USD 15/ pax for the trip.

Bring home this souvenier

by imstress about Vietnamese Hat

You will see lots of souvenier shops selling the famous Vietnamese Hat.

I still see some ladies wearing this hat.
They are usuall wore by those street vendors carrying lots of heavy goods balancing them on a pole with two baskets.

Cost - dont pay more than USD2.

Like A Flood

by Arjaree

The picture confirms you that this sure is the city of Hanoi. Its where you will see a flood of motorbikes all around. If you dare, rent a motorbike and join the honking parade. I bet it'd be a fun experience.

If you wanna rent one, walk around the Old Quarter. When you spot tens of motorbikes lined up..that is where you can rent one.

from the family who brought you Little Hanoi...

by papadotas about Ancient Town

This restaurant had just opened up when I visited Hanoi in April. It was the first place I ate at and I returned on a nearly daily basis during my month in Hanoi. It's owned by the family who runs Little Hanoi and the menu is nearly identical. What I liked about Ancient Town was that it's in a more accessible location (a couple blocks closer to Hoan Kiem Lake) and nicer atmosphere inside. The people who work there are super-friendly--the waiters even took me to play soccer with them one day.

The food is great--I tried nearly ever item on the menu. Most dishes cost between $1-2. You can probably pick anything and not go wrong. I loved everything. Dishes with garlic are especially good.
