Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh

by vieviengan

When is the best month to go to this 2 city ?

Can I know what is the transport to get to Ho CHi Min from hanoi ?

How long the distance ?

Where can I get the transport ?

The best month depends on what you want to see, holidays, weather, etc. Please tell us more of what you want to see and how much time you have. Do you prefer plane, train or bus?

My preference is Christmas and New Year's in Saigon, another person might choose Ha Noi during the winter. But really, I think you can choose just about any time of year. Even rainy season isn't so bad. Especially now due to an existing drought season.

So, tell us more of your preferences.

The distance is 1,700km.

As the weather is quite different between the North (Hanoi) and the South of Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh)thus the best time for your traveling will from the end of Oct to Apr.

It drop into the end of wet season in the South and begining of the winter in the North so the weather is not too cold, it is fine for your vacation.

There are 3 kinds of transfer from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi:

+ By flight

+ By train (local train)

+ By bus ( Local bus or tourist express bus)

You could by the ticket by your own or contact with the local travel agent.

Cheers,

From my experience, March is darn near perfect (good mild weather and lower prices than high season). If you just want to see both cities, Vietnam Airlines is the way to go.

Hi,

1, Travel from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh:

+ By train ( local train): there are more than 5 different train per day but I suggest that you should take the SE3( depart at 23.00 PM) as it is the fastest and you will arrive to Ho Chi Minh in the early morning (05.00 AM)

+ By flight: More expensive than train but it will save your time. There are 10 different flights per day from 06.30 AM to 19.00 PM everyday

+ By bus: not recommend as it is not very convenience and very slowly

2, Ho Chi Minh - Phnompenh

I suggest you should take the express boat from Chau Doc (Mekong River Delta) to Phnompenh. It will take around 5 - 6 hours of your time on the boat trip

Travel Tips for Hanoi

Old Quarters

by imstress

If you dont mind being awaken early in the morning by honking of motorbikes and national athems or very loud sound or music over the public loud speakers on the street, this is the place to stay in.

We stayed at Phan Thai (Camellia 4) in the middle of Old Quarters.

Given a choice again, we will choose to stay south of the lake where the French Quarters and shopping centres are.

Money

by pez

Bring US dollars and plastic. Major hotels, banks (see ANZ near Hoan Kiem Lake), jewelry and gold shops all change money.

Freelance money changers descend on tourists all around the center of Hanoi...beware of them.

Current exchange rate is around 15,700 dong to the dollar, and informal exchange rates in restaurants, etc is about 15,000 per dollar.

Bring ATM cards for th best exchange rate. There are over 3000 ATMs everywhere in Hanoi. 3 years ago there was only 1!

Credit cards mainly at major hotels and restaurants.

Hanoi, Old Quarters: Traditional Bamboo Masks

by bpacker

The Vietnamese make their masks out of traditional materials like bamboo and coconut leaves. Used in the local traditional theatre, each mask express a different character and emotion.

Every kind of emotion can be found on the faces of traditional theatre.

Water Puppet Theater

by muddybok about Water Puppet Theater

Tired of drinking and shopping? For a change, Water Puppet Theater is a great place to visit at night.

The art of water puppetry is unique to Vietnam. The puppets are made of wood and really do dance on water. The shows feature traditional Vietnamese music and depict folklore, myth and it normally last about an hour.

Motorcycle Around Hanoi

by Ewingjr98

Just like other areas of Vietnam, motorcycle is the way to go. Everyone is willing to give a ride to the "rich Westerner," so you never have to wander far until you find a willing driver. It is cheap, usually negotiated down to $1 or $2 per hour. These guys also know where the big tourist sights are so they may take you places you didn't know existed or hadn't planned to visit.
