Planning a trip to Hanoi in late June

by Homanded

I know weather isn't an exact science, especially this far out.
Due to last minute changes because of the civil unrest in Thailand, we are looking at Hanoi as an alternative 4 day stop for the begining of our month long SE Asia trip.

Is Hanoi a good alternative? I hear June is / can be quite a rainy month.
We would have a 4 day stop and would take in a day tour in Hanoi itself, do a one day tour to Halong bay and keep an additional day open for sightseeing on our own.
Any suggestions or answer as to rain fall will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Homer

Usually if it is raining in the north then it is sunny in the South.

There are plenty places to see in Ho Chi Minh City aswell. A trip around the Mekong Delta was one of my hightlight of Vietnam but their many other places that can keep you busy for a 4 day stopover with good weather.

Plenty to do in Hanoi to keep you busy.
Go to the Ethnology Musem and you can catch a water puppet show for an extra small fee. [in my tips if you want a quick look whats there]
Ha Dong silk village is close by, can watch them in the factory from the silkworms to the finished product, and a day tour to Tam Coc is an excellent day imo.

Here is the average temperature and monthly rainfall in mm for this time of the year for Hanoi (which obviously is the wet season):
May 28 197
Jun 30 238
Jul 30 322
Aug 29 343
Sep 28 252

I'm afraid earthflyer is not correct in saying that if its raining in the north its sunny in the South as this time of the year is also the wettest in Ho Chi Minh City as follows:
May 29 221
Jun 29 331
Jul 28 314
Aug 28 268
Sep 27 334
You can still have a great time in Hanoi!

Thank you one and all.
Unfortunately, I just heard from the airlines and they are unable to book us through Vietnam as all the connections are full between Hong Kong and both Hanoi and Saigon through the month of July.

~Bummer~
It will remain on my must do list until next year.
I'll have to combine it with Laos.
Thanks to all who have replied.

Too bad...that's wild isn't it...the whole month of July? Wow ! Wasnt meant to be I suppose...but lots of time then to plan for when it does come around.

As De mentioned...DO NOT miss the Water Puppets! Im just starting to write about Ha Noi...but my fav I think had to be the Temple of Literature...Văn Miếu...spent hours there soaking up the Peace and Quiet...

We're flying Air Asia between Siem Reap - Kuala Lumpur - Denpasar.
They do indeed have the best prices but, have terrible track record for not being on time, etc.

Looks like we're going to Bangkok afterall.
Bangkok Air is willing to put off deadline to allow us to make final decision closer to actual date (theyve been great at working with us even offering 100% refund).
Things seem to be settling down and, Bangkok was our intended destination all along.
Never having been to Vietnam, I think it deserves a heck of a lot longer than 4 days the first time...

Thanks to all for your fantastic suggestions.

Travel Tips for Hanoi

Homes of Hanoi

by guell

The Vietnamese government gives families small lots to build their homes on. Vietnamese families are large and multiple generations live together. The only way for entire families to fit under one roof is to build tall homes. The building in the picture is very representative of the types of newer homes you’ll see in Hanoi.

Mobile phone

by pez

Bring you mobile phone if you plan on staying for a few weeks or more. For about 450,000 dong (about $30), you can get a chip to stick in your Tri-band GSM phone and you get 300,000 dong of credit, enough for light calling for a few weeks. International calls are expensive!! T-Mobile has a peering relationship with Vinaphone, so you can use T-Mobile when you're here--EXPENSIVE. Vinaphone and Mobiphone provide prepaid phone cards (w/SIM chip for your GSM phone)

Hanoi: One Pillar Pagoda

All over the world, you'll find a pair of stone lions guarding the entrance of any Chinese temple.

A stone lion stands, busy preventing the entry of evil but unable to prevent a flock of devotees from crowding the temple

Its open late!

A few doors down from 'Little Hanoi', this is the place your parents probably warned you against -:)

Dark and dingy at first glance, this is something of a magnet to travellers and locals (both ex-pat and Vietnamese) looking for a late-night drink .

Most definately seedy, its nevertheless a friendly enough place (apparently the owner had wanted to develop it as a gay bar but too many travellers discovered it!). But having said that, the small room (its little more than that) rarely gets very full, and so a perfect place to sit and talk in the darkest place in Hanoi! Anything goes

Cyclos and the 2 fat ladies

by SPW

Cyclos in Hanoi are now mainly for tourists, although many locals do still use them from time to time. The riders ring their bells constatly trying to attract attention, especially near tourist attractions.
Hanoi cyclos are apparently known to be wider than those in other parts of Vietnam so can accommodate 2 people but we took pity on the riders and took one each on the couple of times we used them: after all we are big women and it is very hot!
It is important to negotiate the price before setting out and to have the correct money as they often don't seem to have change.
It is also a good idea to place your life in the hands of a higher power as the ride can be nerve wracking: you are out there in front just inches away from the traffic: bikes, motor bikes, cars and trucks.
That said, it is a wonderful way to see things in style, and at a human pace rather than whizzing past in taxis.
