The Vegetable Basket Ladies
by guell
These ladies walk all over town selling the fresh fruits and vegetables they carry on their shoulders. One of the ladies let me carry her basket contraption and it was actually very comfortable.
They seldom earn more than $2US. a day.
Hanoi:Tortoise Sighting at Ho An Kiem Lake
by bpacker
Not many know this but the ‘tortoises’ of Hoan Kiem Lake are actually rare Asian soft-shelled freshwater giant TURTLES .It's rumoured that one of these creatures grabbed a sword from an emperor once and returned it to heaven. Look out for a preserved specimen in the temple.
Preserved for the eternity, the sword grabber maintains an austere pose for locals and tourists alike.

Vietnamese silk is lovely!
by shrimp56 about Local Crafts
You can find silk scarves and other local crafts in shops in many of the bigger hotels. You'll pay a premium, but you can still bargain.
.
The scarf on the left was purchased in a hotel shop. The one on the right was purchased at Craft Link -- see my "support local artisans" . I can't remember which place the middle one came from :))) Silk scarves are wonderful purchases -- they are fun to wear and give as gifts AND they don't take up much room in your luggage:)
.
Vietnamese silk is usually much softer and more supple than Thai silk -- but it depends:) The scarf on the right is "raw silk" and has little more "body" than the other two. Depends on the quality -- from $6 to $20 USD??
Cyclo are Good Way to See the City
by Rodan44
Just as in all other cities in Asia, cyclos (also called trishaws) are widely available in Hanoi to give tourists rides around the city. There is no doubt that they are a nice relaxed way to see a city. The thing that I generally don't like about them is that invariably the guys pedeling them are quite elderly, making me feel guilty, as if my grandfather were pedeling me around town. Also, as in the case of the guy shown in the photo, often they speak very poor English, making them not particularly effective tour guides. Definitely much safer than hopping on the back of some random guy's motorcycle though (amazingly tourists do this all the time).
Great food
by albaaust about 69 Bar Restaurant
This restaurant was one of the better restaurants in terms of enjoying the food especially the local fish speciality.
The only down side was that everywhere we looked was a westerner and a Lonely Planet book!
