Which local tours to go for in Hanoi?

by chriztina

My friends and I are spoilt for choice between a trip to

1. Perfume Pagoda,
2. a city tour,
3. Tam Coc (Inner Halong Bay),
4. Hanoi - Bich Dong Cave and
Thung Nang - Capital Hoa Lu,
5. Hanoi - Cuc Phuong National Park
6. Kenh Ga Hotspring - Phat Diem Cathedral.

We can pick two from the above. Any suggestions or recommendations (taking into account the heat in Hanoi at the moment)? Thanks.

Hi chriztina !

At this time Hanoi temperature is 35 C degree (sometimes reaching 38 - 40) so you should choice there tours:
3. Tam Coc (Inner Halong Bay),
5. Hanoi - Cuc Phuong National Park
If you want to visit more places, i recommend you to go Perfume Pagoda. It's really paradise in the world.:) There temperature is not so hight and there are many wonderful sightseeings.

You must have a visa before you go.You can go to Vietnam embassies in your country, you can find Vietnam embassíe adress at your place at:
It maybe take a long time :)

Or you can apply a visa online,it's faster and cheaper than you get a visa from embassies. You can find more information at:

Have a good trip! :)

1. City tour.
2. Tam Coc, Bich Dong, Thung Nang, Hoa Lu can be done in 1 day.
Kenh Ga is not as beautiful as Tam Coc.
If you have 2 days, it's worth it to do 2 days trip with Tam Coc, Bich Dong, Thung Nang, Hoa Lu, Cuc Phuong, Kenh Ga, Phat Diem. A bit tight schedule but since you want to cover them all. it's possible.

I think a city tour is a must.

Then, you should have some interesting activities.
+ If you like trekking, Cuc Phuong National Park is a good choice.
+ If you like biking, Tam Coc is highly recommend.

Have fun!!

Travel Tips for Hanoi

Hanoi Tip

by amidis

Well this is not actually fondest memory as there are some other fondest memory, but this makes me smile....the traffic in Hanoi. The photo was taken from my room and as cen be seen they are just going in all directions but safely!

Sapa is A Must

by neurochic

Sapa is by far the most brilliant place I have ever been in the world. It is about an overnight train trip outside of Hanoi. Here you will come face to face with the Hmong people, a minority indiginous people in Northern Vietnam. Way of life here is much different from Hanoi or Saigon. Every weekend you will find they have an open air market where the girls of the different tribes come to hock their wares. Sapa used to be a retreat for the French to escape the hot days of Saigon. Here it will remind you of an old ski town with its french chalets. Definitely a breath taking experience.

Shopping around Hoan Kiem Lake

by Ewingjr98 about Local Crafts

The area around Hoan Kiem Lake in central Hanoi has dozens of shops full of nice souvenirs. In this area, I purchased a hand-stitched scene of the sunset over a Vietnamese lake. The designs in this type of art are made with individual strands of thread, beautifully arranged to form a landscape design. The price was around US$3 or 4.

The other souvenir I bought in this area was an egg shell painting that I purchased from a nice little shop where the owners spoke French rather than English. I think this cost about US$5.

Thang Long Water Puppet Theater

by muddybok about Water Puppet Theater

The Thang Long Water Puppet Theater group has been presented in various international festivals and it really strikes the international puppetry arena.

The following are some of the short folklore and mythical presentation during my visit.
1) Dragon Dance: 4 dragon dancing on the water surface & spit fires
2) Boy on Buffalo with flute
3) Agriculture
4) Rearing Ducks
5) Fishing scene
6) Harvest Festival
7) Lion Dance
8) Phoenix Dance
9) King Le Loi – Legend of the Restored Sword
10) Boat Racing
11) Unicorns
12) Fairy Dance (Highlight – As shown on banner)
13) Dance of 4 Holy Animals (Dragon, Phoenix, Lion & Unicorn)

Some of these short plays (esp. the Rearing Duck, Fishing & Phoenix Dance) are very funny and I enjoyed the show very much.

If you are coming overland to...

by BorderHopper

If you are coming overland to Hanoi from China it is easy enough to arrange a mini bus in Lang Son (near the Chinese border). The cost was $6 usd per westerner (Vietnamese pay much less). There is also a train you can catch...check out an LP guidebook for more info.
Once you are in Hanoi you have a number of options. I rented a bike for 10,000 dong a day which is less than $1 usd. You can rent a motor scooter for about $7 usd a day. I wouldn't suggest renting either a bike or a scooter unless you are totally used to Vietnamese traffic rules (there are signals, no's all about he best man winning & being very careful). If the traffic is enough to scare you away from going at it on your own there are taxis, cyclos, and moto-drivers who can take you around for a fee. Last but not least....just walk it. Everything is close enough to get to on your own two feet.
