How long in Halong vs Hanoi

by haleysmith

We have four nights in Hanoi but not sure how best to use our time. Would it be better to have a 2 night / 3 day cruise in Halong Bay or do you think 1 night / 2 days is enough, allowing more time to explore Hanoi. I have read some posts saying that if you are pushed for time then 1 night cruising Halong is enough.

Thank you so much for your replies in advance.

I would go for the 1 night stay at halong bay as there is so much to see and do in Hanoi. I loved shopping and browsing around the old quarter, and you may want to do a day tour to Tam Coc which is beautiful. Your time will be filled quickly. Have a look at my Hanoi page for ideas on how to fill your time in Hanoi.
Have a good holiday.

I agree, with 4 nights in Hanoi you should just do the 2D/1N Ha Long cruise. Check out my Ha Long page for details on how much we paid, what it included and how it was:

Hanoi is a great city as well. Stay in the Old Quarter, there's lots to do within walking distance. Have fun, Vietnam is amazing.

Could not agree more. Our family of 3 spent 2 nights aboard out boat last year which was a bit too long for us. One night would be just perfect.

If it's just Ha long then 2 days one night is about enough. If you are going to visit Cat Ba island as well I recommended 3 days and 2 nights just because of the National Park in Cat Ba.

i am not into cities, so i often spend 2 days 1 night in cities only. and i think it's enough.
Hanoi is charming in some points, but with the heavy crazy traffic now, i dont think you want to stay longer and there is nothing much to do.

I enjoyed a lot 3 days trip out in Halong Bay. honestly, it depends on the boat you are on too. if the itinerary is good and has enough activities, then it will blow the time real quick and you will enjoy it a lot.

2 days trip is fine, but in fact, it's only 24hours on the boat (check in at 12.00 and check out boat at 12.00 next day), with 6 hours travelling back and forth from Hanoi.

Bottom line is: you know your travelling style, and you go from there.:)

Hope you have good time :)

Seeing the sights and sounds of a Vietnamese market is an experience for sure! You will recognize many items -- but not others. And the fish are incredible! Here we have some of the peppers that give Viernamese cuisine it's fire:)

Give you a real insight into Northern Villages scenery, Biking for one day out of Hanoi would be lovely. Summer will be good for Ha Tay ( with visit Tay Phuong pagoda ) and winter for Bac Ninh province ( to see silkworms, mulberry fields & But Thap Pagoda ).

Hanoi:Temple of Literature

by bpacker

Ever wondered why you see cranes on the back of the tortoises in Vietnamese temples? Well, these animals carry a silent message as the tortoise is believed to live ten thousand years, and the crane one thousand years; and they're seen mostly in temples dedicated to Confucius, emperors and local spirits.

Two animals mouth a silent message: May you be remembered for one thousand years, and may your cult endure for ten thousand years.

GC Bar (aka the Golden...

by BorderHopper

GC Bar (aka the Golden Cock)....I don't know if that is what GC really stands for but according to a few ex-pats and the Lonely Planet Vietnam guidebook that is the name of this lively bar.
It's a bar for every type of person..regardless of creed, style, or even sexual orientation. They've got a regular clientele of ex-pats and locals who really work the pool table well. Tiger & Halida beer girls serve up some great cold beer and the bartenders deal with the cocktails. casual....backpackers, ex-pats, and the corporate type all blend in well at GC.

Vietnamese Airlines mini Van

by kenningst

The cheapest way to get from Hanoi Airport to the Vietnamese Airlines office in the city is by the white mini vans. It cost only USD 2 for the trip. The mini van driver was trying to cheat one of the passenger by telling him that the ride was USD 3 and USD 2 was the old price. When he refuse to pay, the mini van driver even threaten to throw is bagage out of the mini van but the guy stay put and hard on his price and there was a little commotion until a lady from from vietnamese office came and he asked her what the price was and she said USD 2. WALLA...tourist wins....

Stay hard and fast on your knowledge. The price is still USD 2.

To get to the mini van office, turn left upon exiting the main entrance and walk until you see the minibus sign.
