High season in all of Vietnam is November-February. The highest prices will be around TET (Jan 27th in '09, but normally later - in Feb). You will have no such problems in summer.

Vietnam has something like 80 million people, a sizeable proportion in Hanoi - so it always seems busy! As a destination, Vietnam (and Hanoi) is relatively inexpensive; excellent value for money. A tight budget should not be a major obstacle.

I took a two week vacation this past June from Saigon, my home, to Ha Noi and Ha Long Bay. The weather was quite good and not too humid, at least for us. I think June is a great time to visit the North because sunshine is more probable, making everything brighter and greener for photography. I found the mix of foreign and Vietnamese tourists on the packaged tours to be extremely friendly and very funny. The laughter frequeently brought tears to our eyes. To tell the truth, it was the other tourists that made the trip turn out so great, making visits to the sites more memorable. Many of us got together after the tours for dinner and evening walks. We even walked and danced around Hoan Kiem Lake in Ha Noi.

You should be able find many activities to fit a tight budget. Tours are relatively cheap, even to Ha Long Bay. You have plenty of time to research traveling Vietnam on a budget, so have fun and ask for more detail if you need.

Travel Tips for Hanoi

Small chairs/stools , small tables.......

by myspices

All along the streets, you will see small chairs/stools and tables where food are being sold. Some stalls do not have tables.... hold onto your bowl of noodles and enjoy the same. You can choose either to eat your food standing or sitting on that little stool or use the stool to place your side orders. Food is delicious and special. Have a go !

Dong Xuan Market

by Applelyn

In Dong Xuan market, you can find many cheap stuff. This market is more frequently patronised by the locals and some of the stuff are quite unique. But be prepared for its "cleaniness" and heat as you can get really sweaty and stuffy there.

Wooden crafts and souvenirs

by akikonomu about Local Crafts

Wooden crafts in the form of masks, marionettes, boxes (lacquered and embellished with mother-of-pearl), chopsticks, incense holders, cutlery, keychains and bookmarks in the design of local Vietnamese or minority tribes make good souvenirs.

Chances of bargaining successfully increase if you buy more, so go with many friends and travel mates. A good gauge is to cut the price by a third of what's offered and gradually increasing to less than half. If you don't really want, don't budge. There are some not so enterprising shopkeepers who don't play the game - I think it's better to go to another shop.

cheap ride around

by ratinacage

try to get a cyclo rider that speaks at least a lill english and u have yourself a free guide as well, well, sorta.
the ride codt me USD1 per hour and i hired him for about 4 hours, paid for his lunch and beer, cos i really wanted to taste the local food.he could spoke all right english and all.but at the bottom of our 4th beer,he was speaking to me in vietnamese.hahahaha.
he was a really nice guy and brought me to some festival where we met a few more friends and drank rice wine sitting on some grass patch and his wife was bbq-ing cuttlefish by the side.

Good Vietnamese Pho Noodle

by fachd about PHO 24

Pho 24 at 61 Van Mieu is located directly opposite Temple Of Literature. This narrow soup kitchen has two levels that look out on to a typical busy Hanoi streets scape. I enjoyed a delicious beef noodle soup and the freshes avocado puree and Kim had a pure passion fruit juice. The restaurant is clean and the service is very good. Also you dont have to wait very long. The total of our bill came to the enormous amount of 69,000 V Dong about $5 Aud. Needles to say we were back the next day.
