Best hotel location for shopping

I love the hotel, its relatively new, 3 star category, value for money and right in the middle of the busy Don Xuan-Hang Duong road.

Able to get a deluxe room for 45 usd/night inclusive of daily breakfast. The room is spacious, its right infront of the lift, bathroom is okay, it got a bath tub, only downside is it doesnt have a window overlooking the streets. A good thing in one way, as its not noisy, could not hear the beeping sounds of motorcycles.

The hotel got 2 entrance, on facing the Cha Ca St, and the other one is Hang Duong (busy street, where night market is)..

*If you plan to pay your hotel using Visa credit card, there is a 3% surcharge. I think this applies to the rest too, but surcharge might vary.

*There is a complimentary mineral water daily.

Unique Quality: -The weekend night market ( Friday- Sunday), 8pm to midnight is right infront of the hotel...Amazing, whole Don Xuan - street is closed for shopping.

-The staff will even watch over you on the night market if you are in the vicinity of the hotel, and will offer to carry whatever you bring, up to the lift area.

-Breakfast at the fifth level is really nice, a mix of western favorites and local food. There is a wide selection, as its the top level, you can go to the terrace, and watch over the morning rush of vendors and local Hanoi folks.

Cheap hotel in the Old District

We stayed at the Majestic Salute in mid September 2008. The weather was very humid, so the air-conditioning was great. We had room 316 at the back of the hotel. There was a large window which overlooked Cha Ca. The hotel was booked through a travel agent who requested a double room with rollaway, however we got a twin with rollaway. The room was very crowded with the extra bed. Just as well we didn't spend much time in the hotel. Be warned the beds have very hard mattresses. The breakfast was served on the 5th floor (roof level) and there was a choice of fruit juice, fruit, cereal, toast & jam, pho, pastries and other asian choices. Tea (jasmine or black) and coffee were also available. There's a great restaurant on Cha Ca, 1st restaurant to the right on the same side as the hotel. Food was excellent and reasonably priced.

Unique Quality: 3 Public internet available at a charge. Spa/Pool indoor Front Lounge/Coffee Shop/Bar area

Biggest 3-star hotel in Old Quarter, not the best?

I stayed here for two nights in September 2007. I booked a 'Single Deluxe room' for a rate of $46.65. (Room 310).
First main issue was the fact that there was no window in the room. Not a single, tiny window. Other issues included; stains on the carpet (possibly able to see in one of the photo's which i took). I don't mean small, stains or marks, i mean BIG stains on the carpet. Obviously NOT one of their 'high standard deluxe rooms'. Other issue was with the 70's type bathroom where the shower had two pull-together-doors. Upon taking a shower the seals on these weren't working, when stepping out of the shower, water was all over the bathroom.
Staff were friendly and polite. Apparently this is the biggest 3-star hotel in the Old Quarter. Over priced and personally i would recommend staying somewhere else!!

Prices; Single Deluxe Room - $50 ($60 double). City View Single Room - $65 ($75 double). Majestic Suite Single Room - $75 ($85 double).

Unique Quality: ADSL free in the rooms, though i found it to be slow. (Also there was an issue trying to connect, the person who was sent to deal with the issue tried to say the problem was with my laptop, when in actual fact the problem was with the hotel ADSL!!).
There is a bar area on the Lobby level, where you can sit and relax and have a drink.
On the second floor you can have a massage. Other services include; a sauna, jacuzzi, and steam room. (I never used, so can't express an opinion on these services).
Located on the fifth floor is the Orchid Restaurant where you can enjoy breakfast (included in the room rate) or enjoy a meal in the evening.

I think I remember considering it when I went to Hanoi. FWIW, I stayed at the Win Hotel, also in the old quarter (adn I think it's cheaper) and adored it!

Q: Should we change USD or Dong? "Hi, we are going to Hanoi next month. I was told it is cheaper to purchase in USD while you are in Vietnam. Is this true? Should..."

A: "With the low prices in Viet Nam I believe you would have trouble getting correct amount of exchange back, when purchasing in dollars."
