 | Sheraton Hanoi Hotel: Pretty good by the West Lake

Sheraton is one of the five star hotels in Hanoi - the alternatives in a similar category are the two Sofitel hotels (though Metropole is admittedly in a category above), Melia, Hilton, Moevenpick and the Intercontinental. The Intercontinental which is virtually next door is more modern and polished, but Sheraton is still pretty good if you can take 90s glitz. Sheraton is slightly outside the centre of Hanoi, but the Tay Ho neighborhood and Xuan Dieu street is in walking distance with plenty of shops, restaurants etc. Taking a taxi to town should not be a problem. The pool area is pleasant (though water not heated during winter). Get a room with a nice view of the lake (almost all). There are some small pagodas close by, and the Tay Ho pagoda which is one of the most popular in Hanoi is not far. Be sure to tour the old quarters, see the Ethnology museum, and Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, and then relax in the relative quiet area of the Sheraton.
Staff are quite exceptional for Hanoi standard.
