Sunshine 2 Hotel
This hotel was about a 10 minute walk from the lake, location is good. They serve breakfast, and 2 doors down is a good cafe (natural foods) open from breakfast thru and after dinner and travel agency. The hotel was clean, internet in each room, very friendly and accomodating. They also have a travel agency who can arrange tours/trains for you. Rooms are small, but clean and adequate.

You get what you pay for
OK, it's not exactly the Ritz. I could have booked a far better hotel but it has always been my preference to get one that's right smack where the must-sees and shopping areas that one could just walk to. Since there were none, I had to base my choice on photos and reviews by other travellers. This one fit the bill so I got it.
Like other buildings in the vicinity, this hotel had a narrow front but long corridors. The staff was helpful and the rooms spacious with free internet PCs. But the breakfast was so-so: fried rice, noodles, fruits, bread and jams, omelet, and bacon that was 95% fat. The elevator was slow and crampy.
For US$ 25 a night, this would be affordable for backpackers and students.
Unique Quality: There were lots of stores and restos around. It was near Hoan Kiem lake, the famous tube house on 87 Ma May as well as the water puppet theater.
Mrs. Moon is the hotel manager who sits at the tours desk in front of the reception, she's a very nice lady who'd respond to your needs with dispatch.

Budget Travel
Most of the staff were quite helpful, the breakfast in the restaurant downstairs was fantastic. Internet fascilities for the room that I've stayed in (double/suite for what they've called it) Mind the motorbikes honking at night (It's Vietnam, for heaven's sake).
Unique Quality: Front facing street room with balcony. Internet fascility.
