Vietnamese dolls in traditional costumes

by rosyravi

My husband and I will be on an escorted tour of Vietnam in January. We will be in the following cities Hanoi, Hue, Ha Long Bay, Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An. Are there any markets or stores in these cities where I can find dolls dressed in traditional Vietnamese clothing? Where would be the best places to look for these type of dolls?

Thanks

I collect Dolls too. They are everywhere in Vietnam. I bought mine in the Old Quarter in Hanoi, but saw nicer and more array later. Any of the Markets have them. I wanted two, Price $20, haggled and paid $18.85 for two, she wouldn't go any lower. I saw them cheaper at the normal price further south (Ho Chi Minh)Ben Thanh markets is a huge market here.

You will find that dolls in Hue and Hoi An are in different costume too - very interesting - and you will be able to bargain for a good price.

The markets in Hanoi and the Ben Than markets are great for getting dolls but if you are wanting more up-market dolls it may be as easy to check out the shops in the areas you are going.Dolls are everywhere, just watch the quality - what are you paying for??

When you say dolls do you also mean the water puppets? I would like to see the water puppets in Hanoi - would this be the best place to also buy them - after the show?
Many thanks!!

Travel Tips for Hanoi

Food Tips

by FishyLalita

So you may be grossed out of how these people eat! Food on the floor, using the same chopsticks to pass you food, cleaning the cups with old tea. Yuck! Well, at least there's one piece of etiquette here. When you're passing food to someone else, flip your chopsticks around so you're passing it with the back of your chopsticks. That way, you don't spread...... 'cooties'. It's not very common but it should be!

Duck's village

by Aliceinhn

In the rural areas of Vietnam, the rice harvest season is also the season of ducks. Ducks go after farmers to eat dropped grain. Farmers feed ducks in this season will benefit from this - very low cost (nearly free food) but they can still sell ducks at a relatively high price in the city.

Buying Art in Hanoi II

by shrimp56 about Woodblocks by Dinh Luc

Dinh Luc is the artist here. He is relatively known internationally -- these little woodcuts are obviously a sideline that brings in money -- but they are charming.

Getting around with cyclo

by beruangndut

The best way to have sightseeing in Hanoi, especially in Old Quarter, is to hail a cyclo. You can pay by trip or hourly. The cost is about 30000VND per hour for 1 person or 40000VND per hour for 2 persons. It's quite worth as you can enjoy sitting and taking picture along the 36 streets in Old Quarter.

Over-rated and over-priced

by emmanue113 about Cha Ca La Vong

Heard so much about the restaurant and the dish, I thought I had to give it a try. I missed it a couple of times because it only opens for dinner at 5pm. So, on the last day of my trip, I made it a point to get there at 5pm for dinner, before rushing to the airport at 6pm. Well, it was a great disappointment. I find the dish (made up of grilled fish cubes and vege) tasteless and oily. Definitely not worth VND 75,000 per person.
