Pay to Tinkle
by neurochic
Ok I thought that it was very ironic that in Hanoi in order to pee you have to pay. It would be different if I was peeing in a beautiful pristine porcelain toilet, but literally you are paying to urinate in a hole in the ground. It only cost about 2000 VND but if you don't have the money the attendant standing guard won't let you in.
Hanoi : Make-shift barber shops
by bpacker
Make-shift barber stalls use to dot the streets of Singapore. Today, you can only find them in places in Hanoi City
Street side barbers clip their customer's hair in the open. They work fast and concentrate well despite the buzz from the traffic.Hum the "Barber of Seville" when you see them..

Handicrafts & Silk
by Wild_Orchid about Dan Chu Shop
Although the shop is not big, the merchanise is nicely displayed. It has a good range of silk Aodai's, scarves, men's ties & shirts. It also sells wood handicrafts & their products are of reasonably good quality. The staff were pleasant & very helpful.
The shop offers only a minimal discount but their marked prices are reasonable, compared to the many other touristy shops that I visited. It is very close to the famous Water Puppet Theatre and faces the Hoan Kiem Lake. I bought this Aodai as my Lunar New Year outfit and I bought for my daughters too. They loved them! Aodai's like mine are priced between USD25-45 and the quality is good.
Wooden handicrafts are available from USD8 upwards, men's silk ties from USD15.
RED BEER
by hientonkin
While others may pay 1,500 VND for a bia hoi just at the corner, here you pay 15,000 , the fact that this might be the best beer in Hanoi, brewed on the premises in vats directly behind the bar, should be reason enough to drop in. Following the strict Belgian brewing methods, the owner ( who lived there ) has created an oasis for true beer lovers in Hanoi. Strangely, despite its location on this touristy street, most of the patrons are locals wanting to watch a footballmatch on the big screen. If that doesnt interest you, there is a more sub-dued upstairs section that's perfect for " knocking the froth off a few". Red Beer is for those who appreciate the best beer, not the cheapest.
MOTORBIKE TAXI
by balhannah
Motorbikes are everywhere in Hanoi, so it is no surprise, that there are dozens of Motor bike taxi's all wanting your business.
I used Motorbike Taxi quite a lot for getting around. They supply a helmet for you, and off you go. Their price is very reasonable, and I felt quite safe, even though you were nearly touching other Bikes!
I did some tours this way, had a great Driver, who did not go fast at my request. He spoke good English and told me information about sights I had seen.
