The Ritz Hotel Hanoi
by honeybea about The Ritz Hotel Hanoi
we requested for 2 rooms on the same floor (we are 5 pax,my husband,me and my 3 kids) and stayed for a total of 5 nights....3 consecutive nights, plus 2 additional nights after our overnight at Ha Long Bay cozy, clean place and the staffs are friendly, reasonably priced tours (they charged us US$58/pax for 2days/1 night in Ha Long Bay although we found an agency w/c offers it for $4 less,we still booked thru the ritz to ensure that they'll keep the rooms for us,we didn't want any mishaps coz we're travelling w/ kids.. we read various stories people end up transferring to other hotels after taking a tour.
we did pay $20 more, the ritz kept the rooms for us,we were happy!!!and guess what? we even felt happier coz we learned that the people who travelled with us (we were 16pax) were the ones ripped off!the swedish couple paid theirs for $78,they said that their hotel was charging them $100/pax so they booked thru an agency, the australians got theirs for US$60...the commission that the ritz got was still reasonable :)
Clean Rooms, Help Staff
by TripAdvisor Member mee-pok-ta
Whilst the room was basic and fairly clean, and their prices were not the most competitive (there are cheaper laundry and tour services around), the staff spoke decent English and were very helpful throughout our stay. We enjoyed the convenience of having them organise our transportation and tour packages for a few dollars more. We would recommend their services to travellers who wouldn't mind paying a bit more for good service.
Perfect Location and Services

Location:
As central as it gets, one minute walk through a small alley and you will be at the Hoan Kim Lake. Even though the mentioning of “alley” can be off putting for some. It should not be. Central Hanoi, especially the old quarter and Hoan Kim Lake area, can be very noisy. Too many motobikes and cars! Drivers honk excessively and for no apparent reason. A bit more “interior” location can be a welcoming thing.
The room:
The hotel is relatively new so it is in very good condition. Bed and sheets are all in great condition and clean. There are TV, a small fridge, desk, and chairs. Bathroom is adequate in size. Hot water is included in the price but heater is not. One will need a heater especially in the winter time. It was freezing cold when I was there. Therefore, I suspect that you will have to pay for the A/C separately as well. I find this a bit distasteful as the place is in the (low) midrange category, not a dorm.
A word regarding the style of the furniture in the room, they try to look, hmm, “antique-old” Vietnamese style. It is kitsch at best. It is like a Huyndai trying to pass for a Masserati. Nothing wrong with a Huyndai but let it be so. Some rooms do not have window as I learned from another guest who had stayed there. Therefore, it is prudent to ask whether or not your room will have a window.
Services:
Definitely is a very strong selling point of this place. The front desk will help you all they can. They will treat you more like family member. Breakfast is included in the rate, which consisted of barguette, egg, or omellete. I do not drink coffee but noticed that they do make coffee for guests at any hour of day free of charge (I overheard this). There is also free internet for guests. Three PCs total.
Recommendation:
Absolutely!

The Ritz is a small hotel with the feel of a bigger bed and breakfast. And, just as many bed and breakfast owners show real pride in their place, the staff at the Ritz exhibit great pride in their little hotel across the street from Hoa Kiem Lake.
We arrived in Hanoi in the evening on a late flight, but the driver the Ritz arranged was still waiting. Our daughter, who teaches in Can Tho in the south, had been recovering from surgery and we were a bit anxious to see what the Ritz was like, hoping for a comfortable stay to help speed her recovery. Arriving at the Ritz, we were a bit doubtful because we had to walk down an alley to get to it. Yet, once we arrived, the warmth of the staff and the pleasantness of the room made us realize we came to the right place.
The Ritz is located just off the western side of Hoa Kiem Lake and just around the corner from the Cathedral. There are many restaurants in the immediate area, and the shopping district of the Old Quarter is a short walk away. Therefore, we had the convenience of proximity to the bustling Old Quarter but the quiet of the Ritz's location.
One improvement we suggested: shower curtains. The bathroom floor can be treacherous when it is wet from a shower, but I understand that this addition is being considered. And, if you like to get to bed early, the only downside is the heavy bass beat from the club across the alley. (The noise dies down around the 2300 curfew.) We also arrived during an unusually cold spell of weather. The Ritz had an adequate heater, but it costs an extra three dollars to make it operational.
It was very easy to arrange our day trip to Ha Long Bay. We enjoyed our interaction with the staff, who were always ready to display a keen sense of customer service. Thank you Ritz staff.
A snug retreat in a noisy city
by TripAdvisor Member travelswithmimi
We were exhausted by the time we arrived in Hanoi! When the taxi dropped us at the Ritz I was afriad we would not get a minutes peace because the location is right in the middle of the "action". Thankfully we walked down a small passageway (it was tidy and well lit) and saw the Ritz was tucked away from the noisy street front where we were dropped.
Our room was 102 and when I saw it had no window I wondered if it would bother me as I am a bit claustrophobic. It proved to be wonderful because there was absolutely no street noise and we slept so well. The blankets on the beds were nice and heavy and we appreciated it as it was cold in Hanoi. We too paid extra for the heater but it was still only $27.00 a night total.
Breakfast was served in a small area and both mornings I enjoyed sitting and visiting with other travellers. They let us order off a menu and made us omelettes served with a big baguette and butter and jam. A fruit plate was included.
We used the free internet often during our stay.
The staff did everything they could to provide for their guests enjoyment and needs. They have a good travel agency service.
We will stay again next year when we go.
A fantastic find
by TripAdvisor Member ShariA
I stayed at this hotel for four nights (on two seperate occassions) and was so happy with the find. Apparently it hasn't been open long so not too well known, and certainly you wouldn't find it walking down the street (you have to go down a side alley but nothing dodgy).
Lets get to the bad stuff first, as that is what most people want to hear although there isn't much. It is a little noisy but nothing bad compared to everywhere else in Hanoi. There are only two rooms per floor and the first time I stayed on the 5th floor the second on the 6th. However first stay someone took my luggage up the second I needed the exercise. Otherwise I would say a smallish hot water tank, but no worse than anywhere else - just a shame you can't utilise the bath properly.
As for the good...the staff are really friendly and helpful. The breakfast (which is included) is not just a baguette and cup of tea but includes omelettes etc and always fruit, which the guy in the kitchen prepares beautifully. The food is also good here if you need to eat in. The location is handy for everything, including being close to a supermarket that is always nice. Rooms are really big, very very clean and comfortable. It was freezing when I was in Hanoi and the heating works REALLY well. Given that it is reverse cycle air-con, I assume the air-con is just as good.
A girl I met changed hotels to here are hers was dodgy and agreed with all I have to say, as I know other guests did.
Overall a great stay (and only $19) I would strongly recommend. Best to email the property direct to book they were great to deal with and works out cheaper than most websites.
Fantastic little hotel but stay on the higher floors!
by TripAdvisor Member Beckymae
This is a wonderful little place tucked in a lane off the Lake in Hanoi. Because it is behind the main row it is very quiet, unlike many Hanoi hotels. However, I would suggest getting a room on the higher floors above 1 or 2 as there can be some early morning noise from the kitchen and with guests who leave early dragging cases down!
Ms Spring and Mr River are excellent hosts and do great deals on any tours that you may want. I am a travel agent myself so I know that prices were very fair.
The hotel is clean and the furnishings are all brand new. It also has cable TV with more stations than this standard of hotel would normally have.
Free internet downstairs is also a bonus.

Good Value, well above average
by TripAdvisor Member GlenLivet
This hotel is a real bargain. For 22U$ you get a nice, albeit small, room with breakfast, air conditioning (and a heater, if needed), shower with a very small tub, and mini bar/fridge. There are three computers in the lobby with free internet. The location is excellent, across the street from the beautiful Ho An Lake. It is also a short walk to the water puppets, the main shopping area and old quarter, 15 minute walk to the old market, 30 minute walk to the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, Temple of Literature and the French Quarter. The hotel is located down a small ally and that makes it a bit hard to find, but this also makes it very quiet.
The staff was very helpful. They arranged our trip to HaLong Bay and called for taxies when ever we needed one. There were also lots of moto drivers in the area for a quick ride. On the downside, the room cleaning left a bit to be desired and they gave us too few towels. They did give us more on request. We had a 4th floor room and the stairs were quite steep (no elevator). This could be a problem for some people. Overall, this was a very convenient, serviceable hotel and well worth the price.
Unfriendly Staff And Bad Management
by TripAdvisor Member churachura
We have travelled a lot in the world, expecially in Asia. But this hotel was really the worst!
We booked the Ritz hotel through hostelbookers and paid a deposit. However, when we arrived there, a man (who works at the hotel and has had very good comments about him on this website) said to us" you can not stay here, because another guest had a visa extention problem and I let them stay at the ritz longer," We really could not understand his excuse. I do understand if there was double booking or somebody is sick but it was not fair to let us to go to another hotel even though we had already reserved for this one. The other guests could have been asked to move on as they had no such reservation. Then we had some discussion. Finally he offered us one night free unhappily and complaing a lot that he is loosing 22usd from his pocket. When we arrived at another hotel, we were not happy as it was less good than the Ritz and the room was quite damp and had very little natural light when compared to the ritz. Then we asked if the hotel offeres us 22usd and we will pay an additonal 22usd and we can stay somewhere comfortable. Then he started to shout at me " I have never had such a difficult guests etc!!! I can not offer you 22 usd if you do not stay this hotel. " He really lost his temper. I was crying in my room. Actually, he was not paying any money for the another hotel, as the hotel was also owned by Ritz. After all, he told us to get out NOW if we are unhappy. As we did not want to waste any more time, we accepted what he wanted. We really did not care if they offered us one night for free or not. If we have not given any deposit or credit card details, we have left the Ritz without doubt. ( at the end, he did not give us one night free, we have to pay for one night deposit anyway.)
This hotel has been having very good reviews. As a result, they can get guests without trying anything. Actually, we have seen many hotels in Hanoi and Ritz is not one of best. If you are not arriving late at night, it is better to look for a hotel yourself. There are so many nice and cheap hotels in old quater.
