Any recommendation for eateries not too far from Hanoi Airport

by moonhill

Hello there!

I have about 5 hours waiting time in Hanoi Airport. Instead of staying in the airport, I would like to have your recommendations for any nice cafes/restuarants not too far from the airport that I can visit.

Many thanks in advance!

Your out of luck there, apart from the Airport Hotel (which is pretty dire) there isn't much around the airport to do. You can get into town in about 40mins which leaves you a couple of hours to sit in a nice cafe on the lake.

Travel Tips for Hanoi

Life around the lake

by SirRichard

If you take a walk around the Hoan Kiem lake you will see a very interesting aspect of Hanoi everyday life. In the morning and in the evening you can see people jogging, doing TaiChi slow exercises, chatting on the benches...
...or just sitting there on their pijamas, with that pleasant rural relaxed atmosphere, doing nothing, watching the time go by, like the old man in the pic :-)

Lenin Park

by victorwkf

South of the famous Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Ba Dinh Square area lies a small park just next to the Vietnam Military History Museum with a huge statue of Lenin as well as flowers arrangement forming the word "Hanoi" (see photos). On closer look, these flowers are actually fake flowers! Anyway, this is a good place to sit and relax, especially if you are exploring this area of Hanoi.

Books and Stationery Shops

by victorwkf about Books

If you want to visit books and stationery shops in Hanoi, there are many of them located along Hai Ba Trung Street and Trang Tien Street at the south end of Hoan Kiem Lake. Most of the books are in Vietnamese, and some of these shops sell souvenirs as well.

Hanoi Map

by yuet29

I walk around hanoi old quarter to buy a hanoi map with bus routes. It was raining heavily and I was in a disposable raincoat walking under the rain.

The biggest bookshop in Hanoi, Thang Long bookshop and most of the post offices in hanoi dont sell the map with bus route. In fact the most possible reason is there are too many motodop(moto taxi) in hanoi, people seldom take bus.

Finally I got one on small book store in a small pavement squeezed between buildings. That time they was packing up, the day is turning dark and the weather is around 17 degree celcius. Wind blew strongly. I want to bargain but the lady refused to sell in lower price. She said this is the only one hanoi map with bus route, and it left only one. Finally, I take it with 40,000D.

Just because i dont want to take moto taxi, I bought the map. After that I found that the map is not really useful because the bus system in hanoi is not very comprehensive. Especially in old quarter with 36 old streets, it covers not even 20% of the streets.

Overpriced and awful

by Stubi about Cha Ca La Vong

I see this restaurant more like a tourist trap. Advertising everywhere to go there. But what you get is this:

First you will realize that there are (almost) no locals but only tourists (don't think Asian looking people there might be always from Hanoi - there are Asian tourists too). You get the food without ordering. A view small pieces of fish in hot oil. You can add vegetables. The taste is an extremely oily experience - nothing more. But eat slowly since you do not have much to eat...

To summarize: an awful snack for far too much money... This restaurant seems to live mostly from one time customers - I will not go there anymore too. I write this after having been living in Asia for more than 10 years and so with some Asien kitchen experience... The best meals I found in Hanoi were in a small street next to the market in the old quarter. The street is Dong Xuan directly next to the market hall. It is only a few meters wide so that you can only walk there. There are many food stalls next to each other. The prices are even smaller than the street ;-) The quality and taste of our meals was always perfect. And you get real local food.
