halong bay

by nesh50

If I were to do a Do It Yourself Halong Bay trip, will I be able to get a junk when I reach Bai Chay wharf and then book my 1night junk stay there on the same day instead of arranging it earlier? If yes, is it risky? I'll be visiting there and will be staying in a junk for 1night on 8 Dec 2009.

If you book your trip in Hanoi, it will also include the cost of transport to Halong Bay, usually by mini-bus. This will take a few hours each way.

Overnight on Halong Bay, you will pay upwards of around US$30 to maybe US$150 or more, including transfers, and depending on the quality of the boat/junk.

My recollections of the wharf there - madness. Masses of tourist groups. Glad that we had someone to follow to get on the correct boat!

We did a do-it-yourself and had no trouble getting a boat BUT it was crazy there and it wasn't even full tourist time. AND we were certain of the type of junk we wanted - A/C, good meals, where it stopped, what activites available etc..

The advantage of booking first (did that the first time) was that transport was prearranged and easy, the type of junk was also decided before we got hassled at the wharf.

I would book the tour. I have done both Do_it_yourself and booking tour and I prefer the latter.

You will easily get a junk because there are plenty of daily junks in Halong but they only serve day-tour not overnight and the schedule is usually tight so you may not have enough time to enjoy yourself. If you wanna spend one night on the bay, I recommend you to book a 2day/1night tour. The price is not high, around 90 USD. And you don't have to worry about the transportation or the itinerary... You can book tour through agents or the hotel where you live but it is cheaper to book online. Last month, I book a tour with Halong Phoenix online and got a discount. It was a really pleasant tour. Wish you have good one, too.

Travel Tips for Hanoi

Yummy Street Foods - Nem Cua Be/Fried Spring Rolls

by myspices

Nem Cua Be or the fried Spring rolls - Fillings of meat and vegetables wrapped with crepe and deep fried. It is best eaten when it is still warm so that you can feel the crunciness of the skin and the tender fillings of the Nem Cua Be. The dish is usually served together with a plate of raw vegetables and a bowl of sweet & sour sauce. You dip your Nem Cua Be into the sauce and the raw vegetables provided are "coolers" to the dish. Sitting with the locals by the roadside and enjoying the Nem Cua Be. The one outlet that we went to was next to a small temple with shades of trees.

The Surprisingly Excellent Vietnam Art Museum

by AKtravelers

One way to beat the heat is to visit the astounding Vietnam Museum of Art, which houses some suprisingly beautiful, if not well-known, paintings. I was the only person really interested in art in my group, most of whom just wanted to get out of the heat, but the others got enjoyment out of the war-era paintings, including one entiltled "Off to Battle the American Aggressors". If you like scultpture, there's plenty of excellent pieces in that genre, too. It is easy to see the French influence in the Vietnamese artists, who seemed to really take to the colorful nature of Impressionism, but it's also interesting that the paintings are distinctly Vietnamese.

Shopping Mall – Hanoi Style

by WaRPer about Shopping Areas

Whenever you just can’t bare the hot weather, come to Hanoi’s shopping mall. Pretty much like a a/c flea market, little kiosks and some private-owned shops. Located on the other end of the Hoan Kiem Lake (if you’re standing in front of the water puppet theater.) Try the supermarket on the second floor, where you can by some fresh and dried food (canned dog meat available), and lots of other stuff in FIXED PRICES. Instant Pho noodle, chips, fruits, bottle water, soda,.....

music to accompany the water puppets

by Audrey118 about Water Puppet Theater

The highlight of the accompanying musician was the lady who played skillfully the Single Stringed Monochord instrument. It is just amazing how single string played varying sounds and its sustain and vibration!!!
The drums also lent wonderful sound, creating the tempo. There was also ancient-style guitars which we had earlier seen being sold in shops around the Old Quarters.

Get taken for a ride

by pez

It is reportedly possible to go to and from Hanoi's Noi Bai airport using buses 7 or 17. Also, you can take number 9, 18, or 23 and tour around the city in a circle, returning to your point o origin without backtracking, all for for only 2,500 dong, about 15 cents. The buses are nice enough, in fact some of them are the same models used in Paris.
