Motobikes traveling in Hanoi
by Ladyfromasia
Hi,
Its a great way to rent a motorbike and explore Hanoi. You can visit the places that I aready listed on my page http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/93e1b/ you can get more than 5 places on a day, depends on your driving & map reading talents :p
Besides, you can visit several places by outskirts of Hanoi but its better you have local people to guide you or you could loose the way.
Tell me if you want more info abt Hanoi or Vietnam, I'll try to reply.
Cheers,
M&M
ROW BOATS....AND THE ROWER!
by balhannah
On a visit to Tam Coc, take a look how some of the ladies row their boats.
Would you believe, that they ROW WITH THEIR FEET.
Actually, the photographer who took my photo, rowed alongside our rowboat, paddling with her feet, and taking the photo at the same time!
Visit Halong Bay
by Wild_Orchid
If you are in Hanoi, and have at least 2 days to spare, do make your way to Halong Bay. I highly recommend it, because Halong is simply beautiful.
For more information, please check out my Halong Bay pages.
Halong is only 180 km away, but due to poor road conditions, your coach will take at least 3 hours to get to Hanoi. Ours took about 4.5 hours and I had a lot of irritated people on my hands, especially when it turned dark. The journey was made longer due to one of those shopping / coffee breaks at one of those "humanity" centres.
OVERNIGHT STAY ON A BOAT-HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Since the coach journey is quite long, please plan to spend at least 1-2 nights on board a boat at the Bay. Those who take the 3-hour drive here and then just do the day-cruise (approx 6-hours on board), will not have a good time. This is because, 6 hours on board is simply not enough time for you to wind down and relax sufficiently to appreciate all that the World Heritage Site of Halong Bay has to offer. Please trust me on this!

This is a, by no stretch of the imagination, nothing but a watering hole for lonely men to ogle the bar girls and buy drinks for them in exchange for company. Similar to what you might find in some girly bars you would find along the P. Burgos Street in Makati, Philippines or peppered about some parts of Bangkok (Patpong is not what I'm referring to here... we all know that's way beyond a girly bar). No dress code it seems.
Getting from Hanoi to Halong Bay
by emmanue113
Only after the (bad) experience I had with my Halong Bay tour that I found out it's so easy to go to HB on my own.
With a DIY trip, you wont have to worry about getting cheated by the tour operators. You can choose your itinerary (routes) and take your time to truly enjoy the beautiful attractions.
Here are some tips:
1) Getting from Hanoi to Halong Bay:
Take a minibus from Hanoi (Gia Lam bus station) to Bai Chay bus station [every 20 minutes; journey takes around 3.5 hours].
2) Getting around Halong Bay:
Once you reach Bai Chay wharf, you will see many boat companies. You can shop around for prices (and check out their boats) before renting (the prices are roughly the same though).
If you are going in a group, its definitely worth hiring the whole boat (VND380,000 for a 6 hour tour).

For routes (these are standard routes offered by all the companies):

Please take note of the caves' opening hours (around 8am - 5pm) when choosing the routes. The boats start operating around 6-7am.
