Great Location
This 3 star hotel is where I stay when I get up there, the location is great, right next to Hoan Kim lake. Rooms a well kitted out and has free ADSL in every room.

New Zephyr Hotel near old quarter
I didn't actually stay in this hotel, but it came highly recommended by the good people I met at Culi Cafe (read more about this in my food tips). This hotel just opened in September 2004, so it is pretty new and it is excellently located at the top of Hoan Kiem lake, just next to the old quarter. While it is a little more pricey than the average hotel in Hanoi, you will see from its website that you will be paying for better accommodation. I'll definitely be staying at this hotel the next time I'm in Hanoi!

Personally I rate the Zypher as the best mid range I have stayed in, mainly due to location which the best. Service was good and the have free ADSL in your room if you have a laptop

a great position easy to walk ( 7 mins min walk) to the Hoan kiem lake and the old quarter, the bar at the top floor has a good view over Hoankiem lake and people and traffic below, great shopping around. The staff will bend over to make you feel welcome.
Note that there are some rooms with no exterior windows, they face an closed interior staircase.
